  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question about RED Armour?

The way I understand it is that the camera is covered, it's just that the sensor is not covered after 90 days.

so, I'm guessing that the Red armor continues, but the sensor has a 90 day warranty. This makes sense as I do not think the Red armor covers sensor replacment.

Either way, I do think that Red will explain it and it will make sense, they are often more thank fair in these situations.

The upgrade happening before the end of the extended warranty does throw a bit of a wrench into things. But from experience, there is no need to panic, it will be fine.

I hope you're right, Ketch, but there seems to be some ambiguity in the wording, as it mentions the 90-day warranty covers the sensor and associated parts and labor. Does this mean all the upgraded internal components? Does this mean one board in my camera is covered for the remainder of my Red Armor warranty, and a board sitting next to it that's just been placed into the camera body will only be covered for 90 days?

Any and all clarification on this by the powers that be at Red is most welcome and appreciated. Not seeing footage before the upgrade is one thing, but not knowing if your camera will continue to be covered under warranty past the 90-day mark is unsettling.

I wish they would rethink it.

As I see it, the sensor is not part of the warranty but the rest of the camera is. What is unclear as has been stated above is what about the new boards?

Since the armor is not transferable to other users its a camera/user warranty. It will still be the same serial number and the same owner so I hope they'll rethink it and carry it over. If anything is being repaired under RED Armor it doesnt change (shorten) the warranty time for the exchanged parts either. The exchanged parts will still be under RED Armor until it expires or get 90 days (whatever is longer). At least that's how I understand it.

On top of that, if its a user error I don't think RED armor would take effect anyway?! Also it would only be counting for the rest of the extended warranty period anyway and not be refreshed.

that makes sense.

yes Zero warranty is legal in California.

The EU laws are for consumer goods, I don't think Professional equipment is covered.

It is the same in New Zealand, business purchases aren't covered by the Act.

I would also think so, and i think red will rethink it, otherwise they are heading the direction of the big companies that they so not want to be... this kind of warranty is not caring for your customer. 2 years waranty is real customer care and standing by your product.

They are really touting MADE IN AMERICA, but not standing behind it at all.

But at the end of the day they made me a believer.. and no matter what, I will always stand behind them.

After my few years experience with RED, they are far from the other two companies that Ive dealt with in the PAST.

Well Scarlet upgraded Dragons will keep their Original RedArmour & Scarlet to Epic Upgrades will get the balance of RedArmour transferred.
Seems odd that Epic owners don't get the same deal!

IF I HAVE AN EXISTING ORIGINAL OR RED ARMOR WARRANTY FOR A SCARLET I AM UPGRADING TO SCARLET DRAGON, WILL THE BALANCE OF MY WARRANTY CARRY OVER TO MY UPGRADED BRAIN?

Yes, any remaining balance of your SCARLET BRAIN original warranty will carry over. If you purchased SCARLET RED ARMOR extended warranty coverage, any remaining balance will be transferred to your SCARLET DRAGON BRAIN at no additional charge.

IF I HAVE AN EXISTING ORIGINAL OR RED ARMOR WARRANTY FOR A SCARLET AND I AM TRADING IN FOR EPIC-X M-X OR DRAGON, WILL THE BALANCE OF MY WARRANTY CARRY OVER TO MY TRADED IN BRAIN?

Parts and labor of the new EPIC-X M-X or EPIC-X DRAGON brain you receive will be warranted for a period of one year. Remaining balance of your SCARLET BRAIN original warranty will not carry over. If you purchased SCARLET RED ARMOR extended warranty coverage, any remaining balance will be transferred to your EPIC M-X or EPIC DRAGON BRAIN at no additional charge.

I thought this would have been addressed by someone on the Red Team by now. Does nobody consider it strange that Scarlet owners who have spent half as much on their Red Armor plans as Epic owners will see that coverage remain intact over upgraded, even traded-in cameras? While Epic owners are left to wonder what remains covered? How does this division between Scarlet and Epic owners make any sense?

Beyond the inequality stemming from this policy difference from Scarlet to Epic owners, I'm left with questions about what role something like Red Armor plays after the upgrade. Some people think the body/brain will remain covered by their Red Armor warranty, or in other words, only the Dragon sensor itself is not covered under the extended Red Armor warranty. But there's a question of wording on the Red website that suggests the sensor and *associated parts* will only be covered under the 90-day warranty (http://www.red.com/faqs/dragon/warranty). How does this factor into our extended warranty coverage? All the talk of new ASICs and board swaps has me concerned that only pieces of my brain will still be covered for the remainder of the extended warranty...and even if it's the majority of the brain will be covered, what kind of confidence will we continue to have in our cameras and the manufacturer's warranty with this kind of policy? I know some people have had trouble free experiences with their cameras. I've had the camera in a few times for part failures, and while Red has generally taken care of me in these instances, I'm wary of how these scenarios would have played out had my camera not been covered under warranty (which was the reason I laid out nearly $3k for the extended warranty in the first place). Now I'm left to wonder if I should have simply saved that money for insurance coverage :(

I understand why people are skiddish about signing up for a $10k sensor upgrade without seeing the results, but I personally have no doubt that Red will have made another big leap forward, essentially giving us a new product in terms of performance (consider the leap from the original M to MX sensor). What is currently holding me back from taking the leap of faith is the warranty situation. That there even exists such a discrepancy between the Scarlet and Epic upgrade path in terms of honoring existing warranty leads me to believe that it has not been fully thought through or considered at length.

If anyone from Red in the know (Jim, Jarred, Brent, Nick, Trent, etc) could weigh in on this topic and provide some much needed clarity, it would mean a lot to me, and surely many other Epic owners who are on the fence about the upgrade because of warranty. If there is a particular reason that Red has chosen to take this approach, I would at least appreciate to hear their reasoning and know for sure that there will be no change to this policy. Even if there is an option to pay some additional prorated amount to see that the remainder of our Red Armor policy covers our cameras in totality, it would be a welcome consideration. And above all, I think it would be a gesture that restores our confidence in Red as a company that stands behind its products, its warranties, and its customers.

Respectfully optimistic,
Clint Litton

We would certainly welcome an optional Dragon Sensor / ASIC extended warranty as well. Something that could be added to your Dragon upgrade order before installation would be ideal. Can't hurt to ask. :-)

Has this discrepancy in warranty terms between customers upgrading from Scarlet vs. Epic been addressed by someone from Red yet? I've been looking through the upgrade threads, checking back to the FAQs on the website, and I still can't help but feel that this is a strange and uneven policy.

Can someone from Red please weigh in on this decision? Why would someone who paid $1500 for an extended warranty get the benefit of that warranty carrying over to cover an Epic body, but someone who paid $2850 for an extended warranty not be given the same consideration? It doesn't make sense to me, and it's the primary reason I haven't yet elected to upgrade. Any insight from others--especially from the Red Camp--would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Clint

Hope i can clear some things up.

Yes Dragon will only receive a 90 day warranty (this was the same for our MX upgrade with the RED ONE). When RED Armors were purchased they were covering the camera itself, RED did not advertise it would cover any upgrades under the extended warranty.

We thought it was being fair allowing RED Armor to transfer the remaining balance if someone upgraded to a new camera since they wouldn't have had their camera long enough to get the full value of having RED armor.

RED Sensors have always been solid, they rarely have to ever be replaced unless there is user error (like point a laser directly at the camera).
