Just had to mention how impressed I am with the DaVinci Resolve 9.0 user manual. This thing deserves the Pulitzer Prize for User Manuals!

I've never seen such a thorough and detailed user manual for any hardware or software. It's well written and explains the program in a user-friendly manner, but still manages to go in depth. It's organized so that you can immediately access whatever info you need with ease. Not only does it clearly explain each and every function at length, but it gives real world examples and ideas as to how to incorporate it into ones workflow... with color pictures!

Van Hurkman really went all out on this one... it's not just a user manual, but a color grading handbook in its own right. I really can't speak highly enough of it.

Kudos to BMD and Hurkman for raising the bar!

Thank you Desmond. With Resolve development moving so fast keeping up with the documentation is a constant challenge. We wanted the manual to be more than a 'this button does this' description but also to guide users through some of the practical issues they will encounter, particularly with roundtrip workflows. I agree that the many months Alexis worked with us on this manual produced a great result. His tutorial and training videos for Resolve are very good too. I will pass on your thanks.

The resolve manual is the best software documentation I have ever seen. On top of describing all the features thoroughly it provides real world scenario examples of how the features might be best applied. These are clearly examples from someone who has been there done that. It demonstrates a deep understanding of the post production world along with specific technical knowledge on various workflows. It's given me a great respect for BMD as a company and prompted me to buy more of their gear.

its the best most concise manual Ive seen. Plus Da Vinci Resolve is a great product. Please can who ever wrote it write one for RC-X too ?

I really hope that Alexis does another video tutorial like he did for Resolve 8. I bought that and I'd be sure to buy one for the newer version.

Alexis is second to none in the quality of his technical writing. I consider the user manual he wrote for Shake 4 to be one of the best manuals I've read in over 20+ years. It's actually "readable," which is an incredible feat, considering that most manuals for brain-meltingly complex software read like they were written by software engineers, and not real-world users.

I wish Alexis would approach ReVision:FX to rewrite all of their plugin manuals. Even as nerdy as I am, their user manuals are completely impenetrable in terms of readability.

Please publish it in .epub (iBooks) and .mobi (kindle)!

Yes, I agree -- Blackmagic is a class act in many ways, and the new DaVinci Resolve manual is very well done.

Alexis goes a long way towards not only telling how to get something done, but also why it has to be done that way.

BTW, the (free) link to the "Colorist Reference Manual" (617 pages!) is here:

Just a quickie: I'm trying to draw a very detailed mask, I can zoom into the clip, and I can tilt up and down the clip, but cannot find a way to focus, very close up, on the left or right edge of the clip - how on earth do you pan the clip in the viewer? This must be possible, it's driving me nuts - can't find this in the manual, which, I agree is very good indeed!

OMG - I post this, turn to my desktop, and hit the mouse button - and drag - there it is - sorry to be a dummy...

Paul :-)

Superb Manual!

Superb Manual!

The RESOLVE 9 manual is extremely well written, and explains every concept clearly.
We have printed it and are using it in a film school environment, and students, who normally shy away from reading documentation, find it good too.
It is a reference book in its own right. Kudos to Hurkman and the DaVinci team for coming forward with a colorist's bible!
