  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

James Cameron Announces Glasses-Free 3D

I saw a Dolby 3D display, using Dolby + Philips technology, last year at IBC. It was certainly the best AS3D display I've seen but IMO not quite there yet. It was nowhere near Full HD per eye, for example. Also, its 3D lacked depth, i.e. it looked quite flat. Given the choice, I would still go for active shutter glasses.

Nice

I remember the last time Philips was all gung-ho for 3D about three years ago....right before they killed the project and fired the division.

I had seen it Monday at Dolby stand and was very, very impressed. The technology is 100% Phillips. Dolby got on board just a year ago. The 3D effect was present regardless of angle, apparently the 3D depth amount is adjustable, as is the space, where it works best. In case of Dolby display it was set to work between 1 to 4 meters. They calculate 28 stereo pairs in real time based on depth information, which is either provided by production( Cameron/Pace for Avatar) or derived from stereo image by using Foundry technology. They even had modified MacBookPro showing the same Avatar imagery and it is stunning. Picture just floats in space. I asked the cost for modification and had been told, that it's no more than a few dollars per unit. The cost is for lenticular lens, that goes on top of the screen and the actual processing chip. Obviously, I asked, if they talked to Apple and apparently, they are talking to pretty much all computer display manufacturers. The biggest response, so far, and firm commitments are coming from China. No surprise here.
The only negative, as far as I'm concerned, was when I had watched the 4k display, my eyes felt a bit uncomfortable. It's like I couldn't quite focus properly. I thought it was just me, until both guys on the left and the right of me asked me, if my eyes were uncomfortable. Apparently I wasn't the only one. I had mention this to the Phillips rep and he said, that they never heard this kind of response. He wondered, if may be they over cranked the depth effect. But I felt the same thing, while watching the MacBook Pro. So, see it for your self...

I talked to Phillips guy at the Dolby stand and, according to him, the 3D technology and all engineers just got transferred to the new division and merged it with Dolby.

If the sensation was felt only while looking at a higher density display, that is one of limitations of lenticular membrane technology when it's "neither here or there" and eyes are trying to focus on an overlapping imagery.

I swear every time you think about buying a new TV someone comes up with some supposedly earth-shattering and mind-blowing new way to do something that will be just around the corner.....and then you never see it again.
