Hello,

We are looking at purchasing a backdrop for compositing post production of R3D and still photography. Can anyone recommend models to consider or avoid?

Any additional input regarding lighting and best practices is welcome as well.

Thank you,

PCG

Where are you based? I'm in the UK and always go to the guys at Bristol Paints. www.bristolvfx.com - Remember though, for a good, flat key, it's all about good even lighting across your material!

Can anyone add when it would be more appropriate to go with a blue screen vs. a green screen?
(Besides obviously an important subject which happens to be green)

Better with green if you do not have any green chothes or such in the scene.

Then use 5600k light for your scene an then make sure to filter the light that hit the green screen with green filter, that makes all the different. Rosco greenscreen paint is the best to paint with, for cloth I do not know the brands. rather see painted greenscreen with rosco than cloth as it's usually more even.

You can get a 9' green screen paper roll at Samys for not too much $ - works great for setting up green-screen anywhere.

Stay away from eefx.com!!! Two years ago I ordered one blue screen from them, paid and never got it! They were telling me stories about "supplier quality didn´t fit their standards" and other stories. As long I could have had the possibilty to claim back my money (60 days paypal) they told me stories like that, after this time I couldn´t reach them anymore. No response on e-mail, nobody taking the phone. Never got my money back (around $350.-).

Green is the name of the day when it comes to RED for two reasons - both relating to Bayer pattern:

1. There are twice as many green photosites as there are red or blue, which makes green screen that much easier to work with

2. Green represents about 60% of weight (in terms of importance to human eye), as compared to about 29% for red and 11% for blue. This is why the green channel is the closest to the luma (brightness) information in the scene and why Bayer pattern sensors are designed with twice as many green photosites.

Ultimately You will encounter both blue and green clothing, but (for the above reasons) it is much easier to separate green clothing from green screen, then it is for blue clothing from blue screen. You can always buy an additional 12' x 12' blue chroma cloth for those odd occasions when the subject is "too green" for comfort...

Ouch. I guess things have really changed since I got mine. buyer beware from these guys then. Too bad, the product is actually pretty good.
