  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Custom Steadicam for REDusers <1800USD - Post your ideas

Does that mean a pre-wired v-mount (or ab-mount) with RED compatible lemo is not a possibility?

If you mean 6 pin lemo with smart battery support - they are working on this now. As well as on LEMO boxes (they also will have 6 pin connectors).

Boxes will be extra, as about 6 pin cable going out of double plate, I hope not (but can't promise 100%).

It'd be really great if it could -- have the RED compatible lemo cable directly out of the dual-battery plate (even just voltage read out is fine) that is pre-wired through column/sled to the top, and then we can use the d-tap to power the monitor down below. It'd keep cables to a minimum and be, essentially, plug and play.

I'm guessing the Laing isn't iso-elastic, right?

This is the idea, yes. Idea is to have shorter cable that can go our of the plate to box, and supply long cable that you attach to it if you don't need boxes.

Term iso-elastic is TM term by Tiffen :-)

Very glad to hear that Laing is pursuing a 6-pin lemo output from the plate itself to transmit smart battery data. If that is implemented, I'm in the camp that would be up for a single 6-pin to 6-pin lemo cable long enough to run through the entire sled at maximum extension to connect the battery plate directly to Epic. As long as the cable is supple enough to allow neat bunching of the excess when the sled post is not fully extended.:-) Thanks for your work, Vitaliy.

Simplest solution is to make long cable. But it require having different battery plate in the case you'll start using boxes later. I specially checked similar solutions and most of them are supplied with short 6 pin cable, and you just connect longer one to it if you want to go straight without using box.

That's cool. But just for me personally, this brings me back to something I posted about earlier. I have a Switronix V-mount plate with captive 6-pin short cable that is permanently attached to a mechanical interface (I'll omit the manufacturer's name because of patent litigation involving RED) that allows the battery plate (and battery) to be quickly locked onto or removed from the back of the Epic where the REDMote normally attaches. If you guys are basically going to use that same kind of battery plate with captive cable, I could just as easily use my own since I'd never be using V-mount batteries on the camera while flying it on the stabilizer. I guess what I'm saying is if it would save me any significant money, I could go without the Laing supplied battery plate and would need only the hardware for mounting my existing plate to the 15 mm rods and adjustable tilt bracket. But if this is going to cause too much fuss in terms of making the plate an option or figuring out a different pricing scheme, I understand and will buy the unit as is with the hardware redundancy. Either way, I'm just glad for any solution that allows the smart battery data to be transmitted.

any idea when this is going thru?

It depends on that you understand under "this".

If you mean rig shown at http://www.nex-hack.info/wiki/laing-photos (plus bottom level) it can be got fast.

I'll collect things below mentioned that are not done yet

1) Monitor bracket with 15mm rods, this is item you could choose as free option instead of present one. In the works
2) Angle marks on tilt head. Requires redesign of other parts except marks (as you need pointer for some reference), hence time. Can be ommitted for first group as you can use horizontal level for same.
3) Larger diameter handle aread under gymbal. Requires members opinion on how large and how much of them need it. Also plastic or rubber solution requires custom mold. Can be ommitted for first group with later cheap purchase option.
4) Adding 6pin LEMO cable to battery plate. First it require to know exact lemo connector required (2B female? modification code?), second, how many people need it. Let us know.

Good Work Vitaliy

In terms of number 4.) -- I can't imagine a REDuser *not* wanting a RED compatible Lemo coming out of the battery plate (when is it not necessary? It'd be cheaper than an extension cable, because it would only require one lemo)...

Thing can be no so simple. At least Epic/Scarlet use quite rare 1B LEMO connector modification as far as I know. So, idea was to have small cable below with 2B size connector that go to box (or 2B-2B cable) and use cable supplied with camera to connect top box (or top cable connector) to camera.

+1!

m. This requires supply of a second "female section" of the socket block, which can then be attached to a rigid or adjustable bracket for bolting or clamping to tripod bowl, scaffolding pipe, cars, dollies, etc. There has been some discussion of "fancy versions" of hardmounts in another thread (which for the moment eludes me), but the very basic standard mount is a Garfield mount. May be worth looking at offering spare blocks as an option or asking for people to submit prefered hardmount designs.

Looking forward to more photos of the rig ...

I agree about stationary mount, but it'll require more detailed sketches and examples and will be optional only.

Do you know approximately when Laing will be able to ship these new rigs?

In depends on total orders and few last small changes. Must be pretty fast.

>what is the latest price and spec of the Laing group buy offer?

I can't disclose price for now, as small things are not finished yet. I post it soon.
But it won't be any bumps, definitely below 1800, as in title. Sorry that can't be more specific today, it is not my fault.
