  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've been really looking forward to putting all the new features of 4.0.9 to use on an actual job......I especially would like to take the Plus One Module out of it's box and put it on the camera. The posting in the last two weeks concerning new bugs has been extremely quite. What's everyone thoughts on the "stability and maturity" of 4.0.9? I do understand it was a big one, but it has been out in beta for over three months with three upgrades (i believe), ready for a real job?

I like it.

Ive seen real good movement with the 4.0 beta release. Every build is getting better and things get tweaked and the code gets streamlined. Going back and fourth between builds, but this one has stuck.

Do you use a nikon mount? Or canon ? Or pl?

it seems like he nikon was having a few weird things, but its all the time lapse stuff that is so good.

Each build has been squashing more bugs and its getting close. I'm starting to test in in real situations now and it's been pretty solid. Not quite as "fast" as the release build though.

David,
I generally use PL mount, but on a shoot I've got coming up I'm going Canon......what do you mean by "faster"? That's what is perplexing, when the beta was introduced there were a lost of bugs to deal with, and now with the progression to 4.0.9 I haven't seen anything posted in a least two weeks.

I'd say it's really good right now. Shot a short for two days on my Red with the guys from Sound City, running 4.0.9, and we never had nay problems with the firmware. I haven't used the Plus One Module yet, and with that being new, not sure of its stability yet. But with 4.0.9 still being a beta, it's really your choice, since some people do think betas are actual releases, there are bad over reactions sometimes which is pretty funny.

By faster I mean in terms of UI response and magnifying, focus assist tools, responsiveness of the camera software.

1:1 magnification, for example is much improved over the first release.

There might have been one build where the nikon mount was flaky, but its normal now, stuff like that.

4.0.9 has been insanely buggy for me. Been using it the last 5 days and have experienced a laundry list of issues. Haven't had time to send a log file because I've been too busy.

- adjusting audio settings causes the camera to crash and turn off
- the camera won't power on after inserting a new red volt into the side handle. You have to re-insert it a few times for the cam to recognize the power
- frame rate settings aren't preserved after power downs/ between battery swaps.
- bad redmote connectivity

I have to use 4.0+ though because I need to use my +1 module, so I'm kind of forced to put up with the bugs.

I concur with Mr. Stevenson, I have all those issues except for the redvolt problem. So far, so good on that one <knock wood>. I haven't been busy shooting lately, just tinkering with it. Otherwise I'd at least roll back to 4.0.8 as it seemed a bit more stable during the brief period I used it. If I had an actual job, I'd be on the 3.9 or whatever release build, but I'd have to leave the +1 at home. :/

as a 4.0.3 Troll I appreciate you all offering input!
Really helps in deciding when to do Build Jumps.
Surprised how quiet the 4.0.9 build comments have been compared to 4.0.8-

My Thanks

Hi Steve,

I have not been having any of these problems with 4.0.9. Not sure why. Been using it for 4 or 5 days now with not one hitch. I never use the audio in the camera so I can't speak to those issues, I did try manipulating the various audio functions on my epic and they seem to be in order. I also never use the redmote but mine paired and works fine.

Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones but generally when things are not working this site gets pretty chatty about it.

Best, Peter

Peter,
Nice to know it's working for you, I'm very tempted to use 4.0.9 on my shoot this week. I really want the time lapse and the Plus 1......I hope I don't regret it.......I just wish it was release for peace of mind.
And thanks again for the SF hook up with my camera issue a couple of months back.
Best,
Steve

I have been having lots of problems with it.

On a recent shoot, I had all of the following bugs:
1. the temperature reading disappeared. This meant that the fans stayed on full power even when recording.
2. the LCD monitor stopped responding to input, both the touch screen and the side buttons
3. it gave me "Error: 0x0000001d" and forced shutdown.
4. whilst in a menu, the camera just powered down, even though it was on mains.

Bugs 1 and 2 were happening about 5 times every day!!!

I posted about bugs for 4.0.8 but haven't bothered for 4.0.9, so maybe that is why the boards are quiet?

Ah, yes. I forgot about a few of these. I've also been experiencing #1, 2, and 4 consistently as well.

OK, found a bug. No more hot swapping between redvolt and brick. It powers the camera down either going from volt to brick or brick to volt.

So far so good! Prefer it to the actual official release version.

BTW: my assistant is calling about how to cancel the Pre-Roll function, he is out with the camera (I rented it, but the last client left the function ON).

I'm trying to to remember where in the menu it is buried, does anyone have a camera in front with the latest build?

Settings->Recording->Pre-Record

My guess is that the "Always trigger Pre-Record before recording" checkbox is the culprit.

If that checkbox is not checked you need to manually trigger Pre-Record.
