Hey Guys,

my business is about to get to the next level and this is the reason for me to check out a new camera.

i was working with the 5D MK II for about 2 years and the last half year i was rocking with my 5D MK III.
So more FPS,better quality and more customers are the reason for buying some new equipment.

Now i was gettin in love with the RED SCARLET X but... i was said to see that the scarlet is shooting only 50p at 1080p..

So i checked out some other cameras and i found the SONY FS700.
I was gettin crazy while seeing 240p at 1080p in many videos...its just great and i really use slow motion pretty much in every video of mine.

I really dont fond a clear quality test between the scarlet and the fs700.

maybe u guys can help me out to have a decision.

budget is up to 17.000€

Cheers

Ali

FS700 will do higher fps at HD resolution and APS-C size chip... your angle of view on your existing lenses will be slightly narrower, but you will be shooting more of sharper center of the image field.
You will need an electronic iris adapter to use EF lenses on the camera, though

On Scarlet, those lenses will also be narrower angle of view, but you can use the electronic control of the lenses in the same way as on your 5d (if you buy the Scarlet in Canon mount)

When you ramp the Scarlet up to 120fps, you will be shooting a 1k image.. see Phil Holland's excellent charts to see what this would mean in terms of angle of view.

However, the Scarlet is a much less compressed codec, as a RAW image of whatever size, rather than a scaled avchd image.

The slomo in the Scarlet can be used for longer takes than the slomo in the FS700, though both look cool.

Scarlet is a more rugged camera, physically.. can deal with bumps, shocks, etc better.

Sony is more able to use as an ENG, grab and go camera.. but has lower resolution.

Sony has announced a 4k recorder to connect to the FS700, but at an msrp of over $10K

What will your clients pay for?

For me, shooting less than 4k is not ideal as the image quality suffers too much. If you want sharp images in high framerates at 1080, go with the Sony. If you want resolution and want to work in Raw, no question, get the red. In any case, wait until NAB to make your decision.

hey, thanks for your feedback.

i agree with everything but the 240fps at 1080p is killing it ^^

whatever, i agree also with the raw function on red but is the difference between the sensor of the scarlet and fs700 so huge?

NAB is a little event in Vegas where the industry shows of some nice things that may become available a few years down the road... :)

got it.

god damn it, this waiting makes me crazy.

hanging around more then 10 days for this decision... =/

nope... but check this out https://vimeo.com/45762381 i dont see any big differences between high fps epic shots...of course light is perfect in this video..but come on.. i can save more then 7000€ if i buy the sony... iam really open minded to the red but at the moment everything brings me to the sony

I just wanted to provide correct info. I know nothing about the Sony. Does it shoot raw?

8 seconds of 240 with nasty aliasing is great for youtube skate videos, don't get me wrong I have one of both, but scarlet is a professional tool. Even 24p on the fs700 has issues with moire and aliasing but is somewhat easier to use than the scarlet. Sounds like fs700 is more up your alley and then grow into the scarlet. Just an observation.

i dont really now... but the 240FPS @sony fs700, just makes me feel good lol

but u cant say the fs700 isnt a professional tool.....

Are you going to need that high speed on every job? If the answer is no then I highly recommend you go with the RED.

For anything other than the speed there is no comparison. (and that isnt even factoring the cost of a sony "upgrade" vs a RED one)

Low light, built in NDs, cheap battery/storage, S35 slow motion, weight

Personally, I find the FS700 a bit gimmicky.... But it does have some clear advantages over a Scarlet.

If you have a budget of €17,000.... Doesn't the Sony F5 come into that?

But yea, wait for NAB.... Maybe RED will launch a Scarlet II
