Hi there,

I've been looking to buy an Epic for a while now. However, there's a niggling concern that it might not be the best of times to do so.
I happen to be in NY next week and thought about buying it then. For some reason I feel that buying it there makes more sense (also as there are a few things I'm going to pick up from B&H)
Any thoughts? Should I be concerned about anything that might emerge from NAB? From my limited experience with RED it seems a bit unpredictable.

Looking for some advice from seasoned RED users...

Cheers,

Ethan

Well it really does not matter where you buy the camera as it is going to ship from California. That said NY might not be the best location to receive your camera as RED now collects New York sales tax....

There's no harm in waiting till NAB if you can. I doubt that much will change that quickly but it's probably good to see what's coming (from all camps).

Red may release the Dragon but it might be a waiting game...although if you buy an Epic-X now, you might be waiting longer for the trade-up. Might even be cheaper to buy when it comes versus a trade-up later.

As for New York, I think you can only buy a Epic direct from California. If you are buying used or planning to order it and have it shipped to New York, that makes sense. Ordering can take some time (at least it did for shipping to Canada...where I'm sure they had to fill out paperwork to prep). Don't be surprised if you order it and it takes a week before it ships. Hopefully it'll be sooner within the States.

Anyhow, wait if you can. NAB is so close.

One thing to think about...

When Red released the MX sensor for a long time the only way to get it was through the sensor upgrade. I think this time will be different. Red will probably start selling brand new Epics with Dragon within a month or so after starting the upgrade program.

Thanks very much for the insight and advice. I'll probably hold off a few more weeks to see where the wind blows.
Cheers
Ethan

Here's a question that I don't know if it has been answered or not. I haven't read all the threads. What if you purchased your Epic package and spent over 50K when they still had the comes with free upgrade to Dragon sensor deal. Is that still honored?

I think that offer was before the price drop.

If I was you I would order a body only the day before nab just in case red said "this amazing thing/price is for owners before today" just a idea.
