NATURAL HISTORY CINEMATOGRAPHY

Hi Mauricio, thank you very much, glad you liked it!
We used also some Canon lenses (17-40mm, 70-200 f2,8, Tokina 11-16...)
Sometimes we missed the 300 fps of the Epic but overall we are very happy with li´l Scarlet...
Looking forward to see that underwater demo!
Best wishes from Spain!
Alberto

Hi Alberto,

Did you modify your Nikon for the EF mount? Or were you switching between Ef and Nikon mounts?

Thanks,
Sulekh

Thanks Mauricio,

I just started now, don´t have much to share, have more to learn...

I have some footage in vimeo that have taken when I did wildlife photography using canon glass and cameras and also have made a short test with small birds with the R1, it was just a little test, I used the only lens I had avaiable a sigma APO 400mm f/5.6, I have a lot to learn, post production included...

The vídeos:

For now, I'm starting a wildlife documentarie in Portugal about the biodiversity of small rivers, will talk about some insects, anphibians, repriles, plants, and fishes, their relations with each other and with the environment, any tips and advices will be great...

Thanks,

Hi Humberto
Thank you for posting your sequences.
Judging from this you are well on your way to producing your documentary on Portugal rivers!
We are all students of Natural History here... particularly me.
Lets continue to keep the technical and creative dialogue open so we can all learn and be inspired by one another..

Preparing another short Edit on my latest captures-
Should be up within a few days.

Thanks again for posting your work and welcome to the forum.

Hi, need some advice...

I want to buy a good zoom lens to use in R1, it must be nikon mount and my budget is only about 1000€.

I'm considering two option, the Nikon 50-300mm f/4,5 ED or sigma 120-300mm f/2.8.

I know that the 50-300 ED is a good lens and was adviced to me by Dave Blackham, who has help me a lot with other isues also.

The main problem is that I think that the 50-300 will not take teleconverter cause the back element will toutch the teleconverter front element.

I had a sigma 120-300mm canon mount when I start wildlife photography and its quite sharp one stop down, even with 1.4x teleconverter, its also can take 2X teleconverter with nice results.

Does anyone have any experience with any of this lens, can someone please give me an advice?

Thanks

Nzuri sana sana sana! Really great images Michael! So jealous, I just had a job fall through that would have taken me to Tanzania and up Kilimanjaro... :(

Asante! Pole Sana Bwana, hopefully you'll get back soon. Heading up Kili in July to shoot a geology/nature aspect episode it. It's a challenging environment for Epic, difficult to charge batteries etc. We'll be up for 8 days with two night on the summit crater. Should be fun. 10 years since I last did it.

Michael, what lens are you shooting on?

Hi Kyle, lots of them. Main is Canon 70-200, 16-35, 24-70 which I rarely use. I have a set of Rokinon cine lens 24,35,85, and Sigma 150-500 which is fairing pretty well.

Thanks for the reply - your images look really nice - you've got a nice look for your base color grade.

HI Tom
Welcome to my other hang out- Thanks for joining in.
Unlike the UW thread this is much more toned down and professional.
Hope to keep it that way!

Michael- excellent work in Africa- Thank you for keeping this thread visual and engaging!

Hi all,

Michael, good luck with Kilimandjaro. Can anyone recommend a good RED user in New Zealand, since, for a 3 part TV series, I need to license few 4K videos of a weta (in a natural environment), the (in)famous giant insect Peter Jacskon named his company after ? If this note is lost in the zillion others of this very popular thread, I might post it in the "job offers" section...otherwise, reply here or send a Personal Message ! we are not in a hurry: we still have 6 months ahead. Keep rolling !

Hello all! If you're interested I've just started a twitter account following the making of my series 'Scotland's Wild West'. It's shot on a Red with the Sigma 300-800 as my main workhorse and I'm a year into shooting. Some pics and video online and lots more updates to come. Trail for the series coming next month I think. Hope you're all making good stuff!

After giving up wildlife photography and decided to start making wildlife video with none experience about it, here is a reel with clips I'v made in the last month for a wildlife documentary in Portugal.

The footage have not been colorized yet, just small adjusts.

The reel is hight compressed in vimeo, couse I don't have a plus or pro account, but in the computer the footage look great.

Please give me some feedback

Humberto - re advice on longer zooms: I have the Nikkor 50-300 4.5 which is a really useful lens. I've not used the Sigma. I also have the Nikkor 80-400. Of the two, I favour the 50-300 - it has greater zoom range ( 6x vs 5 x) and mine is par focal. Depending on the individual lens they can be decently sharp - mine resolves 140 lp at 300mm and the build quality and all-metal construction are in its favour. I find critical focussing with the 80- 400 much harder, although it is pretty sharp. I also have a number of 300 2.8 primes ( both Nikon F mount and PL) and a 500 f4 - but I find I use them far less often because of the time involved in the lens change.
I haven't used the 50-300 with an extender, so can't comment on whether it fits, and would probably go 500mm or 300mm plus x2 if I needed the extra length.
