  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Even though the Scarlet only shoots 12fps at 5K, will it still output 24fps (or even better 25fps) 1080p through the HD-SDI at that resolution? So, would recording 1080p to something like an AJA Ki Pro Mini be feasible with that otherwise unattainable field of view?

Further to that, if recording at 1k/2k/3k/4k 24fps, is the HD-SDI output the cropped field of view, or does the output stay as full frame?

Thanks in advance.

I guess we'll have to see what Scarlet is actually capable of... But going off of EPIC's current capabilities, you can record 1080p out of the HD-SDI and it is representative of the full recorded area. So if you're shooting 5K, you get a 1080p representation of that.

Given that the internal data rate is limited, I'd be surprised if you get greater than 12fps out of the SDI at 5K. It probably comes out as 24p, but each frame is doubled.

IMO, I really don't know why people would want to buy the EPIC or SCARLET only to record 1080p 4:2:2 RGB from a monitor output on the rear.... Why not shoot 4K RAW and reap all the benefits?

I have clients who can't deal with 5k footage, so yeah. I'll still have 1080p requirement. I'd like it to look as good as possible.

How could you even see, today or in the near future, the difference between 4k and 5k? I mean we don't really have 4k monitors or TVs yet? Only some theaters have 4K projectors. So you can't even really view 5K?

I agree. For drama and big projects that need future proofing I'd always shoot raw, but some of my commercial work has a very short life span and will not need that resolution. I would still like to have the benefits of the shallow DOF of the full sensor, but a 4:2:2 hi-data-rate ProRes file would be fine.

I think you could be right. Anyone from Red have the answer?

I agree with Richard, Jeff, us corporate guys don't need the 4K or 5k straight off but can keep it as the master, its down to many factors, horses for courses, budgets etc. The beauty of Scarlet is howtotal
flexible its going to be, for its PRICE POINT thats the important thing.

All my work at present is never more the 1080p for the final edit.

Ok, but the question was if the hd sdi out will give the full frame image for external recording.. ?????
When I look at the image that is from the full frame through hdmi it looks like it has lag. I mean it looks wierd.
I haven't recorded anything.
sorry.

That's the long answer.

In laymans terms: Yes, you can record the full "5k sensor/FOV at 1080p" on an external recorder when Look-Around is enabled.
