So what's with Vimeo lately? My internet connection streams Youtube 720p perfectly fine but Vimeo craps out on even SD sometimes let alone HD (which by the way viewers can't tell whether it's 1080 or 720). Even when I get my 15meg connection I have issues with them. Also their drop down navigator NEVER works and it seems like just an all around glitchfest... :\

I swear they need to so some major server upgrade and website overhall...

I'm paying for an account!

Anyone else unhappy with their performance lately?

I second this.

Vimeo has been a big disappointment. Every thing craps out within 30 seconds. Considering statistics say that people tune out in under ten seconds when a movie stalls its an issue for a pro service.

I have the exact opposite issue. Youtube has sucked for me. 360p is the only resolution that seems to come it fine on youtube but all HD streams on Vimeo work fine. I am on UVERSE and I think it has something to do with using IPV6 but I tend to not watch too many things on youtube so I haven't really investigated much.

I haven't had any dramas with Vimeo. Mind you I'll usually pause the video and let it buffer first, will try to stream more and see if I have this problem.

I don't have issues with Vimeo streaming, but uploading from the website is a joke. It always stalls, stops around 50% upload. What a waste of time. I've been doing most of my uploads through Quicktime X, at least it gets the file up there. However, just recently Vimeo took over 12 hours to convert a video for me when I'm supposed to be at the front of the line. They are getting slammed with traffic.

Same here. Popular videos are kind of okay but others load very slowly, play a bit and then skip to the end or don't do anything at all. Very frustrating. Youtube is most of the time fine at 1080p without buffering.

I complained to Vimeo as I payed for a plus account but got a very standard answer back about internet speed...

One thing that could be happening is that if you are using OpenDNS, Google DNS (or some other DNS service that a lot of people are using), you may be getting routed to the same servers as a lot of other people. At least I noticed a consistent issue with using Google DNS in that all my Apple updates were taking forever to download...switched DNS and I was back to 1-3MB/sec download speed like usual. It shouldn't work like that, but due to caching, the DNS servers may be only caching one IP address for a given set of servers that would otherwise have multiple IPs.

Just a thought...when we switched away from Google DNS back to Comcast...all was well.

On the flip side, I have noticed that it has been slower getting things onto Vimeo lately and encoding takes a while, so not discounting that there isn't an issue...just that part of it could be if you are hitting a server that has a lot of traffic on it. Or not.

We have a 50+ Mbps connection, and though I don't recall exactly, I'm pretty sure my buffering issue with Vimeo went away when we switched our DNS up...could be anecdotal, but it might be worth trying. I had been trying everything up to that point. Now HD videos buffer in with virtually no issue...even long videos.

If youtube works fine then how would it be anything but Vimeo's fault?

I will say that since that I believe they probably don't have as much compression as youtube and since they don't give you the option of choosing to play either 720p or 1080p you won't know if you are stuck watching a 1080p video which is going to have much harder time streaming then 720p which is lame and why they really should have both options in the player...

But I seriously think they need a server upgrade and to fix the website.

I don't want to use youtube but it is getting really frustrating. I did not have issues like this last year, and I had a slower internet connection.

I just sent them a long complain message.

I guess nobody knows that a lot of Vimeo's transcoding and playback is done on the Amazon cloud. A lot of companies use the Amazon cloud, and as you've seen in the past, they have problems once in a while (Netflix was one popular one, and don't forget Twitter). Amazon always sends out a press release saying those massive outages are the fault of Netflix and Twitter, and not of Amazon.

This is a slideshow by Vimeo demonstrating why they used Amazon, from 2011.

My friend worked at Vimeo, and confirmed.

We have a fast line here from TWC cable YT and Vimeo both play almost perfectly every time. The difference for me is the atmosphere - YT is Microsoft, PC, corporate and Vimeo is Mac, Red, artistic, welcoming, supportive. I refuse to use YT anymore for my work, the last round of copyright warnings and last chance notices when I post trailers for films I have shot with permission from the Producers was enough. Vimeo was built with Cinematography in mind!

Replacing files while keeping the original page is a nice Vimeo feature, just don't try it with Safari! Chrome works well for that, ironically.

Deakins for the win today I hope. Happy Sunday everyone.

That's interesting, but shouldn't be an excuse for them ;)

This feature alone will keep me using Vimeo. It's more of a filmmakers' showcase, imho.

Besides, YT has many more problems than the occasional Vimeo glitch that I get with Vimeo. Don't get me started about monetisation and the over-zealous copyright control and the robot interface/lack of transparency etc etc.

I've also been having sinc issues with my films for the past few months and, though I've corresponded back and forth between dozens and dozens of forum posts and emails with their team, have had no progressions in remediating the issue.

Hey guys, this post is about Time Warner Cable, but I have Verizon FiOS and it worked for me, for YouTube anyway. I'm assuming that the similar servers for Vimeo are at different IP addresses, so this won't work for Vimeo. Still, if anyone is having a similar situation to that described here, well, this will help:

SInce vimeo is hosted by amazon I wonder if there is something similar happening and a way to do the same thing to fix it...?
