Justin Timberlake by David Fincher via Monochrome Epics

Hear you loud and clear. We all sat around and watched this video in all its glory on REDRAY yesterday.... watching it now on youtube is a bit depressing :)

GRRRR any chance for a better version?`:-) but the video still looks AMAZINGGGG stunning cinematography UHHHH :-)

cheers janosch

Looking past the sample's obvious compression nasties etc.:

The separation in the shadow detail, the high value textures. And those skin tones;
And all derived from 3200 asa!

From what I've already seen of Monochrome Epic, stills black and white emulsion would not compete, even with the most specialized processing. And I have done an awful lot of that over the years: water bath developments, amidol, pyro and other staining developers, selenium intensification. Platinum and palladium printing…..

As for motion picture black and white emulsions and processing?: not even on the same planet.

This provides for a quality that is unique to the best black and white imagery: the quality that can make one forget that colour exists. Surely the beginning of a new chapter in the evolution of black and white cinema ( :

Well Plus-X used to be REALLY beautiful, but it's long gone now and it was only 50asa or something.

Double-x looks awful in my opinion.

I Still love tri-x which is still around. Really beautiful, especially if you like your film absolutely swimming in grain! ;)

Kinda apples and oranges tho....

I also really liked the fact it is full of such low budget ideas, really well executed.
A lot of it's not that original but it's all been thought about and shot really well.

I think what you're missing is that Fincher was doing these things in music videos much farther back than you realize. He "invented" what you think is not original:

This one, in particular circa 1988:

I feel completely bizarre defending a music video, and I'm definitely bummed I've done away with my 666 post count, but Fincher in the 80s was a huge influence, and continues to be. Even if all he's doing is glamour, everything is motivated.

A lot of us that make music videos, part of the fun and the history is it's a free-for-all. Freedom to invoke any emotion you want, in any way you want, break the rules, be experimental. So to find technical fault with one to me is like finding fault with a Lichtenstein because you can see dots. :-) But if you don't "get it", that's ok too. Really. :-)

Wonderful looking video. Beautiful monochrome. But David Fincher is starting to show his age... some really cheesy, 80s style shots in there, a lot of ideas that have been out of style for a long time, and they seemed to be taken literally as opposed to having a fun retro feel to it, like is still cool to see a chick splashing her hair in water in slo mo against a wall of light... oh dear... Paul Hunter, Hype Williams or Jonas Akerlund would have done a lot better in that regard as they all share a similar shooting style.

Having said that, David Fincher really does know how to make a beautiful image.

Hes bringing Music Videos BACK!!!! I mean... Seriously? FUUUUUUUUCK.

Never wanted to watch anything in 4K so bad in my life..... Next Reducation, or NAB please play this on the 4k Projector PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!

Without the benefit of watching it in it's full glory, it's still stunningly impressive presented at 1080 on my mac via youtube.

That sensor is seriously impressive. I look forward to viewing a motion picture shot with those Epics.....

We all sat around and watched this video in all its glory on REDRAY yesterday....

Personally, I can't wait until the world is watching all of us on their REDRAYs via a certain distribution network. Please.
