Hi:
I've been away from this board for a few months and things have changed a bit since I was last here. Can you tell me is there any difference between Scarlet X and regular Scarlet? Did the specs and image quality improve over the old scarlet? Thanks in advance for the info...

people get lazy and call it Scarlet and sometime they go all the way and use full name Scarlet-X :)

Thank you Bob and Dennys... Does Scarlet X use the same sensor as Epic. i.e. Is Scarlet X capable of producing the same quality image as Epic? The reason I ask this is quite frankly the Scarlet footage I've seen does not look as good as the Epic footage, but this may be becasue the people using the Scarlets are not as adept in the grading as an established Pro who has been doing this for years.. I know that Epics have additional capabilities for high frame rates etc., but is the image from both the same? Also the production we are planning would heavily rely on filters like those available from the Gen Arts Collection but their collections are not compatible with FCPX ... Are there other packages of this type available that are affordable for tight budgets? Thanks...

A great recent example (some stills anyway) of a Scarlet project were posted recently:

DRAGON CAN WAIT! Some grabs from today's shoot...

The Epic produces higher res with lower compression, so it is obviously going to be of a higher quality - but it has been said that if you set an Epic to match the Scarlet's 4K and compression settings you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

to the some extent yes, but there are some technical limitations,
Epic = 5K, Scarlet =4K, the difference is huge, at least to my eye

Norman, your answer deserve a "compound" answer

1) Yes the Epic is a superior camera as people has noted on this thread. There is more than just the sensor that makes the camera. Superior Hrd means better compression at higher res.

2) Yes the Scarlet can produce as good (or nearly identical) quality than an Epic if you equalize the setting of both camera to say max x of scarlet (i.e 4k at 5:1 @ 24fps)

3) The reason you see more crap made with the Scarlet than the Epic is due to the same formula than predicts there are more bad car drivers on vehicles prices under 20K than people that own high performance cars. You rarely will find someone that owns a say, Ferrari FF or a Aston Martin Rapide S that still trying to learn how to parallel park! :yesnod: So is rare you will find someone that bought an Epic producing footage of their cat playing with ball, usually these cameras are doing real work.

That said, there is gazillion of gifted PROs shooting with Scarlet and making exceptional beautiful work - why - because is about who is on the back of the camera

Here are few sample of Scarlet work:

Here is another socio-economical statement: I speculate you will see more "STILL" lenses toping with Canon L and Nikon "whatever" on scarlet - and then - Lots of REAL Cinema Primes lenses on Epic(s) :yesnod:

I think blaming poor picture quality on the use of Canon L's is quite far fetched. What "Real cinema lenses" do you got that delivers that much better picture?

Bjorn, first of all the fact that you are directing any conversation to me - just make my day - I am not worthy. :-)

My point was not to say there is anything wrong with canon L glass, that is what I have use for over 10 years and all I have --- I love canon L

My point was more to reinforce that with the customer buying Epics - there is a higher frequency/possibility they will use Cinema lenses that simply are too expensive for someone like me whom bought and Scarlet simply because I could not afford an Epic. The examples I provided to make the point how good a scarlet is are probably shot mostly in Canon L or some other STILL lens type.

And yes, I did see the PIC you attached and the Canon L image look better :) So I will hug my "L" glass today before I go to BED :yesnod:

For what its worth...

I've seen a lot of BAD (simply awful) Epic footage that is hands down beaten in terms of quality by some good Scarlet-X footage. Truth is, there entry point of Scarlet means that people can use it to learn their craft and right out of the box better-than-dslr-footage can be achieved - so why not show it off on youtube and vimeo

That said, sometimes I would say you're not comparing Scarlet Vs. Epic, but Operator Vs. Operator - and thats an entirely different kettle of fish.

And this concludes our class today - It it always more about the Operator than the Hardware
