  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the Epic /Scarlet Design copyrighted ?

I was wondering the same thing.

I would assume the design is has a patent on it, although that only goes so far. I feel like that design is different enough that it wouldn't fall under the patent.

Lol... that thing makes me laugh. It looks like a kids toy version of Red made out of hard foam.

Design patents exist..they are a protection of the ornamental design of a functional object such as a chair..etc.
Problem is the design must have such novelty(newness) that it sets itself apart from all other chairs in it's entirety to even a casual observer.
But it has to be the aesthetic and ornamental aspects.
One can not design patent a gear shape or a box shape.
They are solely functional objects and hence functional designs only.

And haven't there been box shaped cameras since the very beginnings of photography..?

Copyright is totally different.
It covers non-functional items from being copied such a song or book or sculpture.

I don't know much about patenting the design of physical products, but the Epic and Scarlet are essentially boxes, the side handle is pretty much a detachable DSLR handle, so not particularly something they designed from the ground up. Admittedly if they go the modular detachable handle route that is pretty well inspired by (ripped off) the Red side handle.

It's okay; their full-size body is a total design ripoff of the Alexa. Gotta play the field.

I'm sure their design is patented, however to be able to enforce this in China, they would have to have some major finances invested in international patent infringement. Chinese companies knock off everything that is popular, and get away with it mostly, because of this issue. Jannard would be better off hiring agent 47 to take them out, lol.

Wow. Those renders would have given me a hard-on back in 2004, maybe.... I'm willing to bet you guys a beer that they can't turn their incomplete web site and little tease renders into a real product before all the mainstream prosumer camcorders are recording 4K/UHD to HEVC-Intra codec at 60fps later this year.
