  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica SummiCRON-C's......

The only thing I know about these at the moment is that they are supposed to "match" the offered Summilux-C primes length for length. A proper A/B set. Similar build and scales obviously.

Should be shipping in quantity first quarter of 2024

I like the size.

They will likely be on display at NAB this year. Perhaps taking orders soon thereafter. I'm expecting a minimum of 5-7 lenses at the time of launch. But, I don't know anything official on that front. Very likely shipping by 1st/2nd quarter next year. We'll certainly know more info by NAB.

Wonder how much they cost....

I'm expecting around $10-15K per lens. But that's just a guess. Competitive against Zeiss Ultra Primes.

they wont be less than 8 to 10 k a piece

I guess Leica, heard me complaining about the elongated skinny look of the Summilux C Primes... ;)

This are actually to be a really nice set, of Fast and compact Leica glass, just not as fast and not as equally impressive in IQ.

But it is actually extremely cool that Leica followed Zeiss's trend as they did with Master Primes and Ultra Primes, as has been said, and they are doing the same with Summilux and Summicron.

Now the only thing they need to get to is get our first set shipped already, and then hire some shit load of people and get some new Machinery in their Labs to delivery in decent quantities.

But I'll say all this inn person to them when I visit the Shop shortly... I promise to share what ever footage and pics I'll be allowed to... ;)

I do in fact like this more compact design much more, too bad they couldn't manage the same with the T1.4 Summilux Cine, absolute perfect size match for EPIC... ;)

Wow, was about to purchase a set of Cine Xenars, I think I'm gonna wait a bit.

Amazing news!!!!

Maybe after that brand new Summicron C primes series it could come the first Leica C lightweight PL zooms...!!!???

So are they gonna make a set of Elmarit primes after this? Lol

Looks like lots of new glass will be out - Phil wanna walk around, maybe drop some science on where all this new glass is headed?

Heh. Of course. Once I schedule my trip up to NAB! We'll see a couple other surprises glass-wise there. Although, I don't know if any will be as alluring or high quality as the top tier glass of today.

The good news for all of us is that there are options and more options coming. There's never been so much quality cinema glass available. I think these days it's more about purchasing what suits your needs when it comes to speed and feature set. Coverage will eventually be a concern for "larger than" FF35 sensors once they become an option. I don't expect that to be the norm though for most productions (not for a long while). When it comes to coverage for Dragon I'm feeling confident that most of the current and modern lenses are what we're after anyways. Remember, even the Illumina's are designed for larger than S35 coverage.

We have crazy fast glass now at a variety of price ranges. The next big trend we'll see beyond coverage is glass with built in electronics. Precise, silent, and accurate motors. They'll be mechanical and electronic; switchable when needed. That's not going to be cheap though. Eventually we're going to see some new lens technology penetrating the landscape as well. How that future tech holds to our somewhat subjective demands for what "cinematic" feels like has yet to be seen. For now there's so many good options now in the $$$-$$$$$$ range. Good for buyers, good for rental houses. I've been meeting with investors all week and likely for the next several weeks. I know what I'm aiming to purchase.

Mechanical masterwork sets such as the top tier glass aren't going away and will be the king of performance for a while.

I was going to type, "this is an incredibly smart move," even before I saw your comment. 10x as much with this information. Leica may make some really strange decisions about some things, but they're getting the C and S lenses RIGHT.

Given that they can't keep up with the demand for the high-end C's, this more accessible set might be premature. Once they can meet demand, though, it might be the thing saves them from having to do the ridiculous Hermes special edition M's and rebadged Panasonics to stay afloat.

On the other hand, given that they can't keep up with the demand for the high-end C's, a more accessible set might be premature. If they could build up the production capacity to meet demand, though, this set might be the thing that lets them stop doing Hermes edition M's and ridiculous crap like that to stay afloat.

Totally agree. Leica seems to always "do glass right" in one way or another. There's certainly that indescribable allure to what they produce.

The difficulty with scaling up production for the Summilux-C lenses is due to the precise nature of the work. Highly trained and experienced individuals. Even with the technological tests and advancements, this is very much a product assembled carefully by hand. Certainly not work to be rushed.

A good read with some nice pictures.
