  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THIS is whats wrong with the world....

i'm not calling you that. i get it, there are frustrating people all around us. i'm probably one of those people to some other people. bring them in gracefully and they will leave gracefully. as a wise man once said... love your enemy.

i believe that sharing is intrinsically better than hoarding, helping is greater than hating, and revealing more powerful than obscuring. share your wisdom, help the weak, and reveal your secrets.

I wasn't talking about you. I figured you had read the comments in the link.

Whatever, the more fools in the world the easier it will be for all of us to succeed. :)

Who's the fool? If you took a straw poll of people in this thread I bet most people would think Canon are taking the piss with their pricing of the 1DC and taking the piss with their threat to take legal action against firmware hackers. I know where I stand and I have zero sense of entitlement.

I don't get how it's overpriced?

Cheapest (kitted out), smallest, largest sensor 4K camera on the market.

As for the legal threat..... I'd love to see what Jim would do if someone hacked and shared RED's firmware to make their Scarlet more like an Epic. Companies should protect their software with the same approach you would protect your film from piracy.

Jay, I'll quote Mike "Fireman" Ross from earlier in this thread.

"Selling a deliberately crippled product to maintain a price differential NEVER works, and always leaves a bad taste when caught out."

You can't hack a Scarlet to turn it into an Epic, you need different hardware for that, that's the point.

But is is just your opinion that it is crippled.... It is not fact.

I think the extra man hours writing and testing the firmware, plus the new assembly line for the extra parts on the camera probably make the price about right, considering they will only sell a few 100 units. You can argue the 1D-X is crippled for NOT including 4K, but then find me a still shooter who would want to pay the $xxx to add the new firmware and heat sink.

As for Scarlet/Epic, please note the word "more like".... Maybe a hacker could get 5K/24p.... Regardless.... My point is that RED protect their intellectual property just as fiercely as Canon... And both companies have every right to that.

There is also the factor of technology enthusiasts publicly writing on their sites equipment pricing related rants without sufficient grasp of economics. Or technology.

People convinced that every technological product on the market, or even the one they see in an audio-video tech store, is differentiated exclusively by hardware components...might be very surprised. Same as the ones who perceive pricing being dependent strictly on hardware components.

This Canon 1D BS online talks spreading from those types of sites, camera comparisons strictly by resolution factor, and similar types of flawed public opinion making is not a product of professional approach to journalism, which requires understanding the context of the subject covered, valid comparisons, argumented claims, and some research before publishing. Among other things.

Whilst this is true some of the most absurd and fantastical comments have been made by users who have many posts and this has been left unchecked too which can be just as damaging.

People doing most of the short posting around RU know fantastically little about things, facts, nor how to think about them, it is not worth answering them you will just get some half baked argument, even from another oven, and so it slides. Not to mention the inbetweeners that think they can think. The problem is, if you are right, they think you're smoking and they are right, sorry, HAVE to be right, rationality replaced by marketing hype, presumption, and common knowledge and experience based on faulty reasoning. There are reasons they have technicians/engineers to calibrate, and test cameras for purchase in networks.

Amen! I agree with that Paul.

I think the point is Red offers a better deal, giving you more from the reject parts. For them, little struggling manufacturer of low volume goods, the Scarlet might be a low margin price. For a big manufacturer, drawing on cross development and manufacturing subsidised pricing, there might be much bigger margins and potential to go a lot lower. Look at the nex 5n, ohh for a raw feeding sata disk port.

There are a lot of snarky commenters on the No Film School blog. Just as there are on any Internet forum, just the same as this one and others. I think its a new thing - this anonymous message system and people can't always easily see their tone when they post and feelings can get hurt, because we are all just strangers dealing with each other. We aren't friends mostly - it's not like email or even facebook where everyone has some basis of knowing the person in the real world.

I've had my feelings hurt many of times on reduser and I'm sure I've made other people's feelings hurt just with my typing rather quickly. It's a very interesting new world. I hear your opinion Timur about Canon and their need to protect their cameras and even the issue of copyright in the era of Pirate Bay. I've had my imagery ripped off many of times on youtube, and I think its all really scary. With that said, I think Magic Latern pushed Canon to introduce 24p mode in the Canon 5d and forced them to build a better product.

I'm really for hackers and modders. While it's not good from a business standpoint, I guess it's the anarchist in me. Oh well. You are of course right - people need to make money for what they make and I shouldn't encourage modders.

Read the comments.... By Odins Beard! the entitlement complex of this generation literally hurts my brain......
I am shocked -- shocked, do you hear -- to learn that there are idiots on the Internet!

If you copied the text and replaced "Canon" with "Red" and stuck it in the reduser.net formatting, I would never know it was from some other site.
I didn't see any more entitlement, snarkyness, or insults than I have seen on many reduser threads.
Funny stuff...
Cheers,
Harry
