Syncing timecode without the red timecode cable

Rented the scarlet this week for a short thinking it would have the standard 5 pin lemo to jam timecode with our audio recorder/slate, but obviously we now know it doesnt have a 5 pin, only the proprietary 4 pin connector to the sync port.

Called 4 different rental houses in the area to see if they have the cable, none of them do and they dont know anyone who does.

Are we totally screwed and doomed to manual syncing in post?

We tried running out of the hd sdi into a pix 240 and using the scarlet as the TC source, then using the pix to jam our slate (which worked) but we cant use the pix or the slate to jam our audio recorder.

Is there any way we can get TC INTO the scarlet without that stupid cable? Any other options?

At the least I would like to get scratch audio off the camera but our rode video mic wont work with it (I know the workaround, we don't want to cut cables).

Anyone have any ideas?

We have a sound devices 702t, pix 240, scarlet, and smart slate among other things.

Thanks!

A $5 laptop mike plugged into a Radioshack $5 3.5mm stereo/mono headphone adapter records usable sync audio on the Scarlet, I think you need to go into the menu and set audio to unbalanced. AFAIK the laptop mike I have is this: http://www.meritline.com/mini-microphone-for-computer-pc-laptop-notebook---p-38156.aspx
If you don't have time to get the cable, might be worth trying a cheap mike and adapter from Radioshack to at least get scratch audio

tried with a battery powered senheiser, phantom power sony, and laptop mic. simply cant get levels for scratch audio. laptop mic is going straight into the mic 1 port, the other mics go through a xlr to headphone jack cable

is there something i need to do that i may be missing?

tethering the recorder to the camera isnt really an option for the shoot for a few reasons. At this point we are trying to cut our losses and just record a scratch track, which is a problem also for some reason. none of the mics we try give us levels!

That's exactly what we're currently trying, but for some reason we can't get levels on the scarlet from the scratch mic. We plug it in, and theres just nothing. Is there some setting i'm not aware of?

I meant that we are trying to use crappy mics as a scratch track into the mic 1 input on the scarlet.

We don't have access to wireless lavs or anything.

Hi Nick- If you are in the LA area I have a lemo -> BNC breakout cable that would work for you. If not, a couple of trouble shooting things.

1) Slaving the 702t - are you plugged into the proper BNC input? If so, have you set the world clock on the 702t to slave? I know, seems simple but can be overlooked if you are stressed. No reason that the lockit box from your TC slate shouldn't be able to jam your 702t, so possibly a bad BNC cable there if you verify your settings and signal path are correct.

2) Scratch mic - you say the 'laptop mic is going straight into the mic 1 port, the other mics go through a xlr to headphone jack cable'

Where did you get this 1/8" to XLR cable? My guess is that it isn't wired correctly. Check this thread for details on why.

Also, you have to make sure you have audio enabled and are not in varispeed or else you won't get any levels.

New York unfortunately, thank you though.

I'm going to fiddle with the 702 again tomorrow and see checking that stuff helps.

No idea where I got the adapter from, but not that place.

This cheap cable will allow you to hook up any XLR mic.

Hosa Technology Stereo Mini Angled Male to XLR Female Cable

The W00den Camera A-Box works too.

You can then get the the XLR adapter for the Rode mic:

I also user this cheap olympus mic that also connects directly to the camera:
Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone with 3.3' Cord & Tiepin-clip

If you have a portable Zoom or Tascan recorder, you can use the onboard mic or any XLR mic with no issues.

You're in NY? Call these guys: http://www.pro-sound.com/

They made my timecode cable for $50.

The Olympic mic Bob suggests does work if you want to sync with pluraleyes or something similar. I have this too. You will get fan noise though and the audio quality is not that good. It can work for a scratch track though.

No fan noise if you use the extension cable and stick it on the matte box or something. But I agree that is terrible sound but good enough for guide.

Good idea. I'll try that next time.
