  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've been laid off, but it's not the end of the world :)

I've been laid off from Golden Gate 3D with effect 1st January due to "growth being behind the projected curve" for the company.

Looks like 2013 is the year of renewal yet again!

I'm going to head back to San Francisco on the 9th and assess my US options, as I only have a two month grace period for my working visa in which to find another job.

I'll likely head down to Hollywood and see if there's anything I can do there, but right now I'm thinking about returning to Japan to pick up where I left off, or selling my Epic camera and sitting down to write a bunch of feature screenplays, something I've been meaning to do for years now.

If anyone has suggestions don't hesitate to let me know :) If you're looking for a highly competent DP/cameraman with his own Epic, also let me know!

I'm very used to operating on my own so I am not worried about that aspect. Just trying to figure out the best way to achieve my dream of being a Hollywood feature film director, since I'm never going to quit!

Have a great New Year's Eve all and remember, always stay positive, because things could always be worse!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Paul,

i'm sorry to hear this, but happy to read you have a great attitude. Even if you pause to write, try to keep your camera. I can tell you that while writing three screenplays, I have had to have a camera nearby to continue to make films because that urge is constantly arising to make small films along the way. Looking through the lens is also a healthy exercise while writing.

If you feel the need to "talk" through this a bit you can PM me and we can Skype. I have some training in this area.

David

I agree with David. If you keep your camera, you can still try and get gigs. A few hundred dollars here and there goes a long way and can pay for that coffee while you write.

I've been in that situation and wrote my screenplay while not having a camera and sometimes, you need a escape from the voices in your head and simply see the world (non verbally again which having a camera helps).

Either way, do what makes you happy.

Sorry to hear that Paul, but you've got a good head on your shoulders. Every change only represents a new opportunity.

Very sorry to hear that Paul, and hope the very best for you in Hollywood, if it does not work out or you should decide to leave the US, before you return to Japan, also know that you can call upon me for a brake in Italy and explore also this part of the world, and while I do have great things moving forward, there is on immediate work that I can guarantee, but what I can offer is a place to crash were you have no worries abut good Italian food, and a nice place to sleep with no expenses, and opportunities to get something done together.

Paul - view it as an adventure. I was in a similar situation a few years ago (I left a company I actually started) but it gave me a new sense of freedom and allowed me to re-align my expectations and plans... sometimes change can be good, this could be one of those pivotal moments for you :)

Ketch - you're a gent (as we say in the UK), that's a great offer.

Thanks Ketch! I have a British passport as well as an Australian passport so I'm free to live and work anywhere in Europe if I want to without issue :)

If I do head your way I'll definitely take you up on your very generous offer!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Thanks David :) I definitely agree with you about keeping the camera but finances may ultimately dictate that outcome. Either way, if I do sell my Epic it's not like I don't have a fantastic group of people all around the world who I can no doubt call on for gear when need, plus I could easily get a 6D or something to satisfy my urges when they hit! :D

Cheers,

Paul :)

Totally :)

Bummer!
Does the visa allow you to start your own company ? Are you on the E-3 ?

Hi Christian :)

I'm on the E-3 visa so I'd have to switch to another visa if I was to strike out on my own in the US I think.

That said, if anyone in the US is looking to hire then the E-3 visa means it's quick and cheap to hire me ;)

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Sorry to hear that...
But seems like 2013 has better prospects for you, compared to what you had in mind, so its pulling you out of your comfort zone... & expecting you to kick some ass with your skills & talent.

I'm not from Dubai but i've heard there are amazing opportunities for DP/Directors there! Maybe you wanna check with Tom Lowe, he's been there for a while now.

Wish you loads of luck & a great 2013
Cheers ~

Hey Jeetu! :)

Am definitely not going to limit myself to any one continent! And being out of my comfort zone is where I do my best work :)

Have a great 2013 also and keep kicking it in Mumbai!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Sorry to hear that, Paul.
Hopefully the new year and the Hobbit will spark more 3D work in the industry.
We have a couple of projects underway, so how knows what is going to happen. I will keep you in mind.
