  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

This is my first firmware upgrade since my association with RED. From your experience, do you guys consider this beta firmware safe / robust enough to try on a commercial shoot? Should I wait before taking this on to a paying gig?

I would love to dive into it and try, but I would like to know if its the right time to take it on a shoot. I suppose I could have the old firmware on a card in case this is buggy..

Looks very promising! X mas gift..

What a gift! I just got my new Epic-X package from Marco only days ago... Thanks RED!
Just awesome.

I've had a few problems with this firmware already. My camera wouldn't boot up until I tried a few times. I would wait for the release version for paying gigs, especially since it's such a significant update.

*Edit* After working with RED support and reinstalling the previous firmware, I still get this problem, so Iʻm going to retract my suspicion that this might be firmware related.

never use a beta for commercial. in fact don't even use a release as soon as they are online, wait until it s really safe.

Enable the auto focus window by enabling focus confirm. The camera will magnify to the window position.
Thank you very much for the quick response. Works great now

Love how quick the blackshade is now and loving the sleep function... one tap on the LCD screen and the Scarlet boots back up.

Great job RED team!

I have a client in the edit bay, and we're working! HOW FAST IS THE BLACK SHADE NOW?

Thanks, that's all I needed to hear..

"Selectable 1:1 Zoom".... is this a touch screen, zoom 1:1 where I touch OR is this the ability to, while recording, do a 1:1 zoom?

Can't wait to load this up.

A heart-felt thank you to the RED team. Happy Holidays.

The way it works at the moment is that it will center the 1:1 zoom window on your focus window. If you don't use AF (or have PL mount lenses) you can still set the Focus mode to "Confirm". This will allow you to place the zoom window anywhere you want and when you perform 1:1 Zoom the area of interest (rather then just the center of the sensor) will be shown.

Of course, as always, we will continue to improve on this feature in the future to allow more control.

Added internal frame averaging capability (advanced noise reduction)...

More details please....?!!? Is this like the Alexa blackshading that uses the excess sensor (at least I think that's how it works).

Also, great idea to release at christmas when no one's working-

We've introduced to "Frame Processing" modes. I will try to quickly explain them without getting too bogged down in details.

The two modes are:
- Frame Summing: used for long exposure
- Frame Averaging: used for noise reduction

Both modes are very similar. They will take the number of specified frames and combine them into 1 frame. By summing the frames together you get a long exposure. In this case the total exposure will be the exposure of 1 frame times the number of frames used. In frame averaging, you will retain the same effective exposure but gain the benefits of reduced noise. This will obviously affect motion blur characteristics so may not be useful in all situations.

It's really all about the software - no matter how great the camera is if your software doesn't back it up your nowhere!! When DRAGON gets here we have a awesome combination.
THANKS RED !! I really mean it!

Whats an in camera speed ramp? is that the same thing as a boost? i'd love to have short speed bursts that can run higher then the kinds of rates we get at continuous shooting, and like previously mentioned full fans would be fine by me if that means i can get short bursts at higher fps... if that is not currently in this build would this be a possibility at some point? id post some cool skateboard stuff if you do it... :yesnod:

Ramping allows you to dynamically change the FPS during a record. For example, you could set your FPS to 24FPS, your ramp FPS to 100FPS and a ramp duration of 2 seconds. When you start recording you will be at 24FPS. When you start ramping (by assigning a key to the appropriate action) the FPS will change two 100FPS over a duration of 2 seconds. When you end the recording your FPS reverts back to 24.
Notes:
- Your REDcode will be limited by the max frame rate (it is not dynamic)
- There is no way to ramp back down
- Your frame rate will return back to normal after the record has ended

Oh! This is fun! Time lapse. Frame summing. Ramping, Power management. Black calib choices. But wait, there's more I haven't explored! Thank you magic guys at Red. Geez, another new camera in my hands!

And a Very Merry Christmas to all!

As always, even with betas, please file a support ticket and send in a log file. Thanks.

Very cool but... 'no way to ramp down'?

Is that literal, as in you can only ever increase FPS, never decrease (for some weird reason? what reason would that be?), or do you mean you can only ramp *once*, either way? So could you program one ramp, one assigned key, and have the ramp be 100FPS - 24FPS instead of 24FPS - 100FPS?

Thanks

Mike
