  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What on camera monitors support the DVI Menus? Not a Marshall, that's for sure...

Well, I finally have the R1! Now I get to discover all the shortcomings of my existing DSLR gear...
I am trying to monitor the R1 and the Marshall HDMI ain't cutting it. Works fine for video out, but NOT for Menus[DVI] and I want to keep an eye on the histogram. It goes pink (I was afraid of that).
The new RED monitors do not appear to be compatible with the R1 (at least they all disappear when filter by RedOne is selected in the store).
I do not know if Menus[DVI] options are sent to any of the SDI outs... That would be my preference.
The SmallHD looks really nice, but only has a spec of 1280x800 and the Menus[DVI] is 1280x848, so not sure about that, either.
My preference would be something like the SmallHD AC7 or DP7 with SDI, but I don't know if the menus will show on the SDI out on the R1. In the mean time I can toggle twixt the two settings, I suppose. Or perhaps an SDI to HDMI converter would work for the Marshall as a short term fix. Not sure.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

John

Thank you for looking. I have used google site search to try to get the info. The problem is that most of the HDMI/SDI questions are from 2010 or so and not only has the firmware changed since then (build 21 to 31), so has the technology in monitors, so the older threads are pretty much useless. The release notes for the build history are a little cryptic. I asked the bomb squad if the histogram appears on HDMI and they said they tested it and it did. So I imagine that either there is an HDMI monitor that works or their idea of "works" is a histogram on a pink screen. I find it hard to believe that the only on-screen monitoring that works is a discontinued Red display of some sort or pink HDMI.

I have had no issues with the Small HD DP4 over HDMI. It looks great. I'm guessing one of their SDI monitors would work really well. I would opt for that over HDMI.

wait wait, what?

if red have discontinued the red 1 monitor and 3rd party options dont display the menu/histograms/focussing options etc how the hell are we suppose to use the camera?
surely your monitor is faulty?

The Ikan VK7 works for me with HDMI and camera set to Menus-DVI. They have a newer model VK7i, but I bought my older model VK7 off Ebay a couple weeks ago. Brand new from Adorama.

Around $375.00

So far, so good.

That's what I was looking for - thanks!

The concern for the new guys (like me) is that the monitor is filtered out of the list when you click the RedOne on the compatibility list.

It's actually filtered out if you pick Epic or Scarlet as well. Put that down to web site gremlins.

FWIW I have a second hand 7 inch Pro attached to my BT R1 and it works perfectly.
