  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Cine lenses are here!!

I need some advice about the 24mm T 1.5 rokinon cine lens.. buy it or don't? (I already have the 35 T1.5 and I love it.)
I read some test that talk about this lens not so good at... a bit soft. how is a bit soft???
still a top lens to use with a red one or not worth to buy?
thank you

It's really not horrible, but it's not as good as the 35mm. For a fast 24mm, imo, it's pretty remarkably sharp at 1.4, and really pretty close to the 35mm if focused well, but the fall off is bad and the distortion is a bit more than I like. The LoCAs are kind of gnarly, too. Whoever complained about color, that's an issue with the 24mm, especially if you overexpose, and likely what makes it inferior to the L. It's a problem with plenty of higher end lenses, too, but it's really bad with this guy. Kind of gross, actually.

To whoever asked, don't get the 14mm for crop. 11-16mm Tokina.

Edit: Trying it against the 17-40mm L and 24mm f2 Nikon (the old cruddy one), the sharpness is better at a given stop with the Rokinon than with the Canon or Nikon (all are decent except in the corners by f4) but there are more LoCAs with the Rokinon. Those who are knowledgable about lenses insist that coatings affect color and LoCAs do not, but in my experience nothing is grosser than a slightly out of focus area taking on that nasty green tint. And you get that here. When in focus, color/contrast/saturation is nice. Fall off is very, very severe wide open.

Just got my Rokinon 35mm Cine lens from B&H.

So far so good, dont feel cheap at all but not sturdy like the RED PRIMES.

The manual feeling kinda freaked me out since my only experience so far are the Tokina 11-16 and Canon 24-105 using the f-stop on the LCD.

Taking it out for a test drive in public soon :)

35 breathes, but not a whole lot, not to the extreme like certain zooms out there. The front element does not move in and out (Internal focusing on ALL Rokinon primes).

Ok that's good news. I hope you juged the breathing by MP standards ;-)

Do you have the cine version? I think the only difference is the T1.5 instead of the f 1.4 marking (=some paint)?

I love my Rokinon Cine 35mm.

As a beginner it sure helps me learn to understand how a cine lens works on the cheap.

Has anyone ordered the Cine 85mm?

Thanks Joseph, all we need is a 50mm :)

Rokinon and Samyang both have active facebook pages; and a number of people including myself have been asking for a 50mm prime lens. Please add your voices; if they see a lot of demand then they will probably get this done sooner rather than later (the whole cine-prime line of lenses was as a result of a lot of people asking Samyang to do it, so it seems they do listen).

I finally decide to give a chance to the 24 T1.5
i'm starting to test it, I'm very happy about the geometry of the lens...
this is a still from red one footage.

Recieved my 14mm cine after getting rid of my standard one. Is any one experiencing the marks being off. Mine arnt even close and this is the second copy I have

Anyone have full res grabs from the 85? I hear that's the best lens of the set.
Yes, I got some focus charts, and some footage also

Just got an email from B&H last night. My Samyang 85mm Cineversion is shipped!
Should be in Norway by Monday. That´s xmas eve so it might be a few more days before I get my hands on it though. Can´t wait to try it out

Feel like sharing any footage? Would love to see real world examples of them wide open for fun.

I just have a 35mm cine at home. And I must say I really like it. Sure it's plastic and it doesn't compare to a true PL lens, but at the price it's still an amazing lens. Of course it's softer wide open but still renders nice images. I do like the look. And the breathing is acceptable as well.

Now what about the others: the 14, 24 and the 85? How well do these hold up? I'll probably skip the 14 and stick to my TOKINA 11-16 (not modded yet) but the 24 and especially the 85 do interest me even more. (Oh yeah, and I have to get the 8 of course for fun and more skating action!)

The 24 is really nice. My only complain with all those "cine style" Rockinon is that the focus rotational travel distance is way too short to pull good accurate focus..(about 120 degrees at most). Wish they would have increased the rotation to double that...

Thanks Maicol, would you mind sharing a R3D snapshot of the file for close examination?

I tried two as well. Marks are well off, and it distorts like crazy. Out of the samyang family is the one lens I never use. I even forget i own it. The 35 im very happy with, and the 24 definitely falls apart at 1.5, but it does allright after 2.8. Hey, still happy with them as a whole, i mean, look at the price tag!
