Okay, I'm past the shock yesterday, that the new price of an Epic-X brain is $19k, or packaged as I bought it Sept 23rd, $22,500 (w/ PL Mount and Side SSD).

So my camera now sells new for $22,500.

What about the Red Armor? Buyer and Seller could make an agreement that would make this, in effect, transferrable, no?
That value shouldn't change. It still costs $2850 to get Red Armor for the new-priced Epic.

And I qualify, having purchased over $50k at once, for the Dragon Sensor for free. New-price buyers would pay $6,000?
That value shouldn't change unless Red changes it.

SO....

Epic-X I paid $38,000
Red Armor $2,800
Dragon included
----------------------------
Total $40,800

New Camera $22,500
Red Armor $2,800
Dragon Sensor $6,000
-----------------------------
Total $31,300

My question, then, is this math reasonable, or have I missed it?
And what is a reasonable, today's market, price? (yes, I know, whatever the market says, but I'd like your informed opinion)

Thanks for your replies.

Not sure if dragon is included int your epic x, only if you spent over 50k when buying it...

Think of it this way - right now, your Epic is worth the future stream of revenue from the camera, discounted back to today!

For the body it's worth 21k to 22k with your Dragon sensor upgrade included. Presuming that the body itself can be purchased for 15 to 16k used. Perhaps they'll throw in some more for the RED armor.

Chris - the flippant answer (that I'm sure will come from others who have been heavily engaged in the 'stop whining' debates that have raged for the last week) is simple... less than 19K.

I can't see resale value on the Epic to be anywhere near the new/slashed price.

If someone wants to buy a used Epic (with only a 90 day warranty) you'll have to add the warranty transfer fee into the mix (when calculating the price). Being honest, if I was in the market to buy, I'd be looking at paying no more than 17K (5K less than list). Any more and I'd want the year warranty and a new one.

The only thing that could push prices closer to list is a blight or new Epics from RED... but I don't think that is going to happen as RED have got their production lines geared up for volume & speed (by Jim's own words in another thread).

I am an affected Epic owner too, so have been looking at these type of things... and, in terms of upside for resale, I don't see one... so all a bit negative in mood for me :(

One thing to note is the Epic/SSD/PL is $22,500 - a little more than you list (every little helps).

Just my two cents (or two pennies - I'm a Brit ;)

Terry, Checking your math now.....

Andy and Andrae, thanks that's helpful, and I think about right.

Thanks, also for the corrected price of $22,500. Missed the difference with mounts.

When you receive the EPIC-X brain it's already used no matter if you have opened the box or not. Same goes for everything you buy. When you walk out the store the products you bought have already lost about 30% from their original value. In electronics the resale value is going down faster than ever before and things will only speed up in the future.

New EPIC-X brain is 19,000$ and that will have 1 year warranty. If you buy used EPIC you need to pay transfer fee for RED which is 850$ and you will only have 3 month warranty. Used EPIC-X brain in good condition should not cost any more than 11,000$. After you pay the 850$ for RED you are 9 months short from the original warranty. 9 months of warranty is worth about 1,100$.

19,000$ minus 30% minus 850$ minus 1,100$ = 10,700$

That is for now. Who knows how much the price will drop in next few months when Dragon comes and other manufacturers announce their new models. As I said before, resale value in electronics is only going down faster in the future with new manufacturers coming all the time and everyone cathing up with the specs with top brands. Prices are going down faster and faster.

Please find me one for 11k.
