  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There is also the option to go the way of the Samurai ;-) I am seriously considering buying one after I got this reply from the Atomos team:

You can. It will send the trigger without a REDMAG.

What SSD drive are you all using? I bought one - Kingston V200 - no luck. It needs to be V+ like (100). Currently, from the list that BMC shows, three are discontinued. Bummer.
 
Was thrilled to get the ProRes update on the HyperDeck and ran out to buy an SSD once I installed the update, but have been dismayed that on my shoots this week (first with the HyperDeck recording a ProRes) the TC in the ProRes files does not match the R3D. I've been using overlay mode on the output (perhaps that's the problem somehow?) but I wondered if anyone else has had any problems. Thanks!

What are you using to power the Hyperdeck via dtap? The only things that I'm finding are the Switronix solution for $150.
 
Holy crap, how did I miss this (the firmware for ProRes, etc.) I'm reading over your review now, but maybe someone will answer these questions before I'm done...

It's $325, now records to ProRes and DNxHD (not just uncompressed)? What about power -- can it be p/d-tapped from the battery? How long does it's internal last?

EDIT: Just finished reading... What about start/stop triggering and file naming?

I'm guessing they haven't announced a firmware or have even considered adding filenaming, huh?

I mean for $325 you can't really complain, but it'd be so nice to swap. I noticed you said the internal battery lasts for 75mins of straight recording, but how long when you're not recording? Also, how much is that proprietary BMD cable needed for battery tapping? And how much is the SDI-to-mini-SDI... When you said $750 all in, did that include a 256gig SATA3 SSD? Cause those are like $250-300. I mean even if RED offer a solution in the future, it probably won't be that inexpensive (and I'd be interested to see if look-around and pre-REDcode compression advantages would work on a RED option like the Meizler's proxies.)

ssd 256 gb $220
x2 mini bnc to bnc (15 dollars each) $30
blackmagic cheeseplate adapter plate $95

that right there is $670 dollars. and than the price of a p tap cable, which should bring you to 750 or under, and you spend a little more if you want another ssd to swap out with. but a 256 gb ssd recording pro res hq can give a lot of recording time. it's on the user to determine how they want to do a reloading process, especially when there's no real control over the file naming. still the cheapest hd sdi recorder on the market that doesnt need a computer, even with the accessories.

i think it's a nice solution for smaller jobs that only want 1080 pro res but you can give them the advantage of epic image quality, and bypassing a whole transcode step when the production is never gonna use the advantages of RAW. plenty of those kind of shoots out there.
 
I think the mounting of the unit is the biggest problem. It is fairly large and the mounting plate weighs a lot. Also the extra cables are a problem. The Hyperdeck doesn't use ordinary SDI connectors but "mini SDI" connectors, and my broke when I only used it for a short time. I was lucky I recorded to a RedMag at the same time. It is a nice unit but it is much more bulk and cabling to concider.
