  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What light choose? Kinoflo vs simple fluorescent. What is the difference?

Notice the flicker evident in the video of the cfl lamps you posted- this is one of the the disadvantages to consumer grade cfls and dependent on the ballasts built into the lamps. Kino Flo are usable through a larger range of frame rates without any evident flicker. The bulbs provided by kino flo have a very high color rendering index (CRI) so as to produce natural and accurate color from the light projected onto your subject - this is in contrast to some consumer bulbs that have a significant green spike in their color output. This may or may not be a problem for you depending on what your are shooting - color correction can help with some of the green spike. Lastly the type of ballast used may produce a noticeable hum which is not the case with Kino Flos- something that may not be a concern to you if not recording sync sound. The first option you posted actually doesn't look too bad but i cannot recommend it as I have never used that brand and they do not list what the standard ballast is. I would stick with Kinos as they have proven themselves time-and-again and have worked flawlessly for me in the past. Either way, if you end up making the purchase of that Konova unit I would be interested in how much mileage you get out of it.

you may also want to check out www.coollights.biz for some great alternatives for kinos. I have had a set for 4 years now and they have held up amazingly well. I also love that the ballast is built into the head so there are no feeder cables that you have to mess with, nor ballasts hanging on on c stands or laying around on the floor. Great selection of lights, and high cri high output bulbs. I have found the lights to be slightly warmer than kinos, but that isn't a bad thing. They balance very close to 5600k.

Thank you, What about LED as alternative to Kinoflo? Even Kinoflo make it. Maybe LED is future and fluorescent is in past and it would be better to find not expensive LED? At least maybe it is not good idea to buy flurescent Kinoflo 2-3 item for 1K each? Maybe it is more perspective to buy 2 LEDs for 1K each?

sorry if its OOT i remember some guy did rock solid unbreakable lights 1-2 years ago someone posted on forum anyone remember the name?

If you're referring to LED tech, you are likely thinking of NILA lights. I can indeed confirm that they are tough.

Thanks! I am just thinking to buy Lighting kit for and I see Kinoflo flurescent is cooll and popular but I can't find out what is the difference between expensive Kinoflo and much cheaper Flolight or Konova or just softbox with fluorescent bulbs? The essence of Light is the same isn't it? Maybe the difference only in comfort but the price of Kinoflo is 1k for item Flolight is 500 for each and softox is 100 usd and LEd can be found for 700-800 usd. So I am thinking is it really necessary to by KInoflo if yes I will buy it but maybe it will be almost the same to work with any other fluorescent kit which less expensive. The LED is individual quetion. It is very comfortable, dimmable, becolor it is seems very perspective investment.
