This is excellent news and best ProRes bargain ($327.75 + SSD).
Blackmagic Design today announced the immediate availability of HyperDeck software update 3.6 (Adds ProRes 422 (HQ) Recording and Playback).

HyperDeck Shuttle 2 can be seen at the Blackmagic Design InterBEE 2012 booth, Hall 7 Booth 7206.

I never realized this had an internal battery. It makes it much more interesting...meaning you can keep the camera very small even with this attached if you go Redvolt/Side Handle combo.

Does this Rec trigger from camera? or do you have to hit Record?

The price on this really makes me excited about the possibilities for REDs "mini Meizler/ProRes" Module.

The manual says there is a sdi start/stop recording option, but "You will need a camera which can trigger the "record" function of HyperDeck via HD-SDI." Well I would love to know if the Epic is one of those, and also if the tc recorded is consistant and of course the name of the files the same as the r3d.

Epic does have stop and start flags in the SDI data and this is read by the Pix and Atomos recorders also the TC is embedded in the data so this should also be recorded. The compatibility of the Blackmagic device is only proved by somebody actually using the devices together.
I would run out the door and buy one if it did support using the R3D file names for the clips but I have not got my hopes up

Confirmed. Just flashed mine. It start / stop via SDI using the Epic record button only works fine (it did on earlier builds as well). It is very nice to have ProRes on this little guy!

Tom, files still named Capture000X.mov

Does anyone know how reliable the HyperDeck Shuttle is? I would be curious what you think Eythan. I know it is only for cheap and fast projects. Are you intending to use it with your epic?

So the downside is loss of Red file naming, as it introduces its own naming scheme. Also do I remember correctly that you need to do something with deinterlacing??

I mainly got it for concerts, press stuff and super quick turn around jobs. It is very basic, but for the price it is a winner for me. I also am kinda a BMD fanboy.. I have a couple ATEM switchers, many decklink cards, etc.

Other than a loose mini din cable, I haven't had any issues so far. Battery life is fair, media is cheap. I use the OCZ Vertex4 SSD's. The last gig I used it on was a press conference. 40min take (DNxHD) with no issues. I also use it with my d800 and hope to try it with my new gopro3 sometime this week.

So as far as naming, I am not sure how the red naming scheme would get onto the Shuttle.. perhaps some of the others options like the Pix have that as a feature. You do get timecode, so it isn't a total hassle. I usually either go to the Shuttle or the Red Mag, not both, so the naming difference hasn't come up. On the D800, it is either internal or HDMI, so no choice.

Operationally, I send it 1080P from SDI on the Epic and 1080P from the d800.. no deinterlacing step that I am aware of.

EDIT: I am sure someone with the RED SDK could write a little perl script to look at the timecode in both the .R3D and the .MOV and do a quick rename based on a timecode match

Great, sounds all positive. BM listens :) i just send them a request for r3d file naming, if we all do that, i'm sure it wil get implemented :)

If it is for using it for Master, I would like to have ProRes 444 12bit, if for offline (and using the 3rd as online) I would like same name as the r3d and of course frame perfect timecode. hope BMD can do this.
Eythan, is the timecode of the hyperdeck shuttle match perfectly the r3d? Thanks a lot

Thanks Eythan! How reliable have you found it? Any glitches in your footage so far?
