  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim, please don't forget us!

And pls don't tell that's Epic territory. Epic's 5K, 5 times faster.

But I do think 5K should be Epic territory at least for a little while. I'm saying that as a Scarlet owner not Epic, but what are the faster framerates really worth? Features are usually shot at 24 fps, large majority of projects are done at regular framerates as well. Just because it can shoot 10x more frames at a given resolution doesn't make it 10 times better. Not even twice as good.

5K for Scarlet won't happen I'm sure, either upgrade to Epic or directly to Dragon later.
But there would surely be a place for 4.5k in the Scarlet, now not later.

I'm sorry, I cannot agree with you. It's true that most of the work is shot at 24fps, but if Red had to have that mind set, we wouldnt have 4K now. Maybe we'd have another hd camera at 24fps

I am very content with the capabilities of my Scarlet for the price I paid, but would love to have a format/usable frame rate that utilizes more of the sensor.

RED is constantly making changes and upgrading firmware, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm not particularly happy with the "camera doesn't matter in achieving good cinematography" rhetoric that I've been hearing since this announcement. At a base level, I bought this particular camera with the promise that I could eventually upgrade to the Dragon sensor when both time and money permitted. It is inarguable that this is a reasonable request given how much it was touted by the camera manufacturer. It's not cool for some to then turn around and say, "well you don't actually need it" 'rent it" "ive done better with less" - I am purely after what I thought was a guarantee with the purchase of the camera, and for it to neither be confirmed nor denied is a veritable reason for me and the other Scarlet owners who pulled the trigger on November 3rd to have some level of anxiety, an anxiety which (given this is the penultimate forum for our camera) has every reason to be displayed publicly. No doubt the logic of this cabal of epic owners will eventually extend to the fact that we don't "need" the Dragon update and should be happy with what we've got. It doesn't matter what I require or do not in the mind of others. What does matter is that RED keeps up their end, which I have every hope that they will.

This rhetoric has been around since the Red One, and when Dragon is finally out of the cage it'll be in full swing once again.

As to 4.5K.. sure it'd be nice, hell, 5k@24fps would be nice too - then so would 2k@120fps and a nice 'cup holder' module for my coffee (patent pending Jim, so don't even think about it! ;-) )

If Scarlet does ever get 4.5k, I look forward to seeing what this .5k is doing for everyones footage - is it going to suddenly be .5k better? Moreover, aside from scientific testing, are you going to tell the difference on the screen? I don't think so.

4.5K to get closer to the much promoted 4K delivery idea.

4.5k means less cropping. Lenses will look wider. Closer to S35. And for resolution, I tested 5k vs 4k, 5k is a lot better in resolution and noise (it's 60% more pixels). You should test yourself with your scarlet. So .5k is not negligible.

Ok, point taken. But it's the same idea as overclocking a CPU - sure you can get a small amount extra out of it, or you could just buy a better CPU.

Scarlet @4k is amazing, and competes (or compliments) images from a Red one at 4.5k.

To paraphrase what I heard muttered at a DSLR workshop:
What you're not getting at 4k, you're still not getting at 4.5k

Hi Sam,
Actually I have tested this for a production company in the UK, where they were wanting to test out cameras at different resolutions for an art installation at the Bradford Film and Television Museum. We shot with Scarlet, Epic, RedOne, DSLR (because they'd used that for previous exhibits) and a JVC GYHD101e (because I had one - but the quality was hilarious)

The resulting DCPs of the footage we're all very pleasing (to the clients too)

bottom line for me considering 4.5k WS

There are no reasons not to do it. There are several good reasons to do it, for Scarlet users but for RED as well.

Agreed - I think its sort of the same as 120fps@1k - Some people wanted it, others didnt need it.

People wanted 120fps @ 2k I guess.
@1k, you can't do anything with it, it's way too soft. And too cropped.

I was hoping for a bigger price reduction of the scarlet, more like 3000 $ than 1750$. So I didn´t buy one yet, but with 4,5 K resolution I surely would!

Even 2K is soft, as everyone know its not downsampled from 4K. I feel very uncomfortable using it, expecially if mixing those clips with 4K captures.

Doesn't make sense to make Scarlets that cheap. Its already very cheap. I think the best option is to improve it in order to attract more customers.
