Grading an r3d sequence in Davinci Resolve 9. (MBPr OS 10.8.1). Rendering out to ProRes 422HQ looks great. Bringing rendered file into Resolve or BMD's Media Express utility and output to rading monitor via Ultrastudio Express it looks identical to the output of Resolve.

BUT ProRes4444 looks desaturated and low contrast when rendered with identical settings. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance.\

Eric

444 is RGB. Are you changing the project settings to 444 RGB when viewing the 444 file?
If not it will look as described. I would guess the file is correct, how you are viewing it is not.

I changed the Set video/data levels to AUTO when rendering and this has solved the problem. Your post helped me figure it out- thank you!!! Everything looks right now in ProRes4444.

How can I easily ensure that everything is broadcast safe with ProRes4444? Normally I check legally scaled video for 422HQ. Checking this gives me flat, washed out 4444 ProRes- since what Ive learned is that ProRes4444 is RGB. Can anyone help by explaining? Thanks in advance!

you need to use scopes when you color. Are you coloring in full gamut 444 RGB? Is your monitor 444?

Generally you want to work in full gamut 444 RGB and do your conversions at the end to preserve as much data thru the color process.

But if your project settings dont match your file settings it wont look correct.

I have the Resolve settings to RGB444 single link 3Gbs with Video Levels colorspace. Using Ultrastudio express SDI to Flanders 2461W which is RGB444 capable. Using scopes in Resolve and on monitor. SOund ok?

Pr444 isn't always rgb, but coming from r3d it should be
And the ultra studio express is a 422 yuv only io device and is not capable of 444 3G single link.
Is your fsi set to rgb or yuv?
Unless you have a compelling reason to be in pr444 other than "it's higher quality" you're better off staying in prhq, especially for broadcast. And broadcast safe entails far more than just "legally scaled video" if you're talking about passing network qc spec. That is only referring to mapping of 64-960 vs 0-1023 for rgb or "full scale".
