  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have seen these go for as low as $600. Keep an eye out for used ones, although I suppose there may be more demand now with this new deal.

Although I really truly believe that you deserve this more than anyone, this post makes me truly sad. Knowing that your late night posts will be no more.. but who knows maybe you still will be stuck to RED and Jarred so much that the occasional REDuser visit from you is possible. but its good to know we get to keep Jarred for a while - he does crazy shit like offering almost free BT Scarlet's when you're not watching...

And then there is that tease from you with that "new tech" ... I believe no one of us has a clue what you're talking about. Guess I do have to book that ticket for NAB 2013 to get to at least shake hands once with you in my lifetime and tell you in person how grateful I am for what you have started with my most favorite company of all times.

Now, keep posting we're not letting you go yet ! ;)

Let me think aside from all the amazing cameras and gear for a moment. You created something incredible with RED. Opportunities. Not only the fact that you are assembling all the cameras and other RED products in USA but RED is the type of company that always think beyond others. You shape lives of other people. Literally. You are opening a whole new world to people in many different ways.

When me and Ted brought in what seemed to be the hottest summer day in LA two EPIC rigs on the very top of the Mount Lee and I stood behind the camera and shot the footage of super-excited kids doing this little sketch with super-excited :smile5: Ted - that was one of the moments in my life when I was so blessed and honored to be part of something truly incredible that might be shaping the future of others in a way. So, I thank you not just for two amazing summer holidays at RED trying to do my best at sharing my knowledge to these young filmmakers :-) but I mainly thank you for shaping my future and for the opportunity you are giving me.

Jim, all the best from Prague. You have done an amazing job with RED. This thing will go on strong.. for a long time.



and btw. I still can't belive that my little video from Camp is up on red.com :smile5: thanks guys!

Jim talking about (a truly deserved) retirement makes me sad too, when that time comes, you'll be missed a lot. All that posts here where a big part of the ride to my first real camera, i waited a long time and i loved this company long before i ever touched a part of your technology. Well, its too early to look back, there are still some missions to accomplish for agent Jannard. Hehe.

A One for 4k is nothing else than insane, i'm really tempted, even if its just for owning a part of RED's and Cinema's history (and it's not just about that) that price is f***ing unbelievable. :)

Jim is not going into hibernation... the man would go insane. I wouldn't count on his late night posts ever ceasing...

It is all about perspective; retiring means different things to different people.

I need him, you need him, we all still need him.. but he really does deserves to enjoy his life with a little less drama.

Expect just a shift in that balance.. not a lights out. Jim is not a "ride off into the sunset" kinda guy.

This was never a job to him... he quite obviously never needed to be here in the first place.

As I said earlier, the man has enough vision to cure cataracts, and that just can't be turned off.

Monumental job. Less drama's in one's life is good, and knowing how much you love actually using the equipment yourself, it's nice to know you'll be making more time to do so. I hope you have many happy years doing more of that and all the other things you enjoy, you've certainly earned it. Thanks for the positive changes you've made in not only my own life but in the lives of many others via the RED technology.

Jim is my best u known friend. Like my other best friends, we have our issues, but it is passionate (from my side) and I really hope we'll meet one day.

Still.
I kinda have an idea of the passion and irrationality. Not his. But mine.
And I do sincerely hope that he can afford himself a bit of peace as well.

Because that is how one in practical terms survives to post here at 3am...

thanks for reminding me, jarred... That Jim is not the kinda guy that just disappears because "the job is done" as he said is all too true. If he weren't passionate about it the whole RED idea wouldn't exist. And if you're in it with all your heart - you can't stop... you can only start to sit back and direct ;)

here's to the maestro! and to he's well deserved long Fiji vacations!

My take on this is that Jim sees that his company is on the verge of accomplishing one of it's main goals - that being providing a worthy digital successor to Film from start to finish. That includes the acquisition device (Sensor / Camera), format & media (REDCODE / SSD), and distribution system (REDRay / 4K Projector / Network).

But a secondary goal, and the motivation behind embarking on the journey in the first place, was to awaken the big dogs... to prove to them that 1080p was just a moment in time and that they would have to change their business practices or be left behind. RED has succeeded in not only forcing the hand of all of the major players as far as resolution, but think about how many other revolutionary concepts that RED preached are now being adopted by these companies when they had resisted them for ages. RAW Workflow, Form Factor, Modularity, Firmware Upgrades, Price... the list goes on and on, and that is why RED will go down in the history books and why Jim should absolutely feel: Mission Accomplished.

I agree that I can't see him retiring in the traditional sense of the word... but since when has he done anything traditionally?

Somebody at the other thread was kind enough to answer my questions, and have decided to wait, as I don't really have a need for it currently.
