I'm keen on a red one, being cheap as chips. I just have a few questions

- what smart canon ef adapters are there? I know of birger, but not keen to spend this much. I just need to mount ef lens with power into them ( for my f1.2 85 and f1.0 50). I guess I would need aperture too.

- how many hdsdi ports?

- Can you record 1080p into a HDTV recorder? I guess there is a speed limit for fps for something like a ninja?

- can you control functions without a red screen.

-any limitations for shooting to cf cards? Or is it best to get an ssd? Not too keen on spending thousands on just storage.

thanks for any help with this. Cheers paul

As far as I know, Birger is the only Canon mount for R1 that is readily available. If you are going to run Canon glass it is really your only choice. Bear in mind that the Birger is NOT RED approved...installing it will void your RED warranty.

There are 2 "Program" HDSDI ports and 1 "Preview" HDSDI port. Download the RED operation manual from RED.com for a detailed description.

You can record 1080p out of the HDSDI ports onto a Pix, Ninja or other outboard recorder. Remember that the R1 also generates QT proxy files along with the R3Ds. Many people use the proxy files for offline and then conform to the R3Ds at the end of the process.

Yes, you can control all the camera functions using the buttons and joystick on the rear of the camera.

CF cards have resolution and data rate (REDCode) restrictions...SSD is a FAR BETTER solution in every respect. Spend the extra $$...you will be very glad in the long term that you did.

thanks for the info guys.

maybe I'm imagining things, but im sure i saw the red one body include either a side card holder or the option of an ssd holder yesterday when i checked?? maybe its my dodgy memory, but now the option isnt there on the site.

im a photographer with 40k of canon lenses, so don't really want to buy a new pile of lenses just for this. i just want a camera to compliment my stills campaigns. i also don't want anymore airline weight by doubling up gear..

how much is the birger option? i while back i emailed many times to the guy when i was pricing up a used redone, and he never got back. i also tried to ring, but no answer...

If you have a sizable investment in Canon glass and want a lighter rig to fly with, I would have to recommend that you buy the Scarlet with the Canon-AL mount. It is the better option for your situation...

i have thought long and hard about this, but i would like 120 fps or faster. i was hoping (maybe dreaming) that red would update the scarlet to handle 2k 120 with the last announcements, but they didn't.
the scarlet with accessories means i am taking the motion a whole lot seriously (rather than a little bit of video tacked onto larger stills campaigns). the redone is peanuts, so i can live with buying it- even if i don't need it too much. but if i go with a sizable investment, i think i would go all the way and get an epic.

i would have happily have purchased an epic if it was a viable stills camera, i make all my money with stills and am very busy with it- so it would be an easy justification. but with everything i have read, and the missing controls (like a stills shutter button not working) and promised stills functions never eventuating (like fast shutter speeds, a decent flash sync or even a working flash connector), i can see the camera just as a motion only option.
thats a pity, as i think the professional stills market is probably 10 times the size of the motion market (a complete guess...) and there is many potential sales there. this would make the red camera an absolute unique product being both a still camera and motion at the same time. it not quite there as it is.

P+S Technik are extremely reputable and reliable. Their engineering is bulletproof. However, I do not know if installation voids your warrantee from RED...
I think that this is the only source for an FD mount, if you wanted one of those as well as an EOS mount
