  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there some different internal processing going on the raw data inside the Epic Mono brain? Because if that difference in sharpness and resolution is all down to the removal of the debayer process and the new low-pass filter, it is staggering.

I am surprised this is not bigger news. The Epic Monochrome does to Epic-X footage what Epic-X does to DSLRs.

It is huge... a substancial jump in sharpness. Its not removal of the low pass filter.. that is still there. if we removed that you would get hyper sharp images but at the risk of heavy moire. But it is a custom low pass filter made just for the design of the monochrome sensor.

The increase in sharpness comes from removing the color filters, so you are using every single pixel for image instead of using a group of pixels to interpolate image data.

The monochrome is so gorgeous it's almost sad to say I like the image way more than the girl! And I'm all for beautiful women!

The footage I've seen from this camera is nothing short of amazing. Can these be modified for infrared shooting too?

It's a very incredible image, guys. It's unbelievable but it's actually other level than Epic...

Is any posibility to use your HDRx chemistry to make Dragon shots with the same exposure but one shot without color data, close to this insane monochrome sharpness, and other shot with the color filters... would it be useful in any way? Sorry if it's a crazy suggestion, just trying ;)

Careful. That's getting close to being an indictment of bayer pattern resolution... ;)

I thought the interpolation only reduced resolution by 15%. 15% doesn't seem like it would be "huge" to me.
 
Thanks for citing my examples Jarred. They do show the underbelly of whats going on, but what you guys just posted shows the beauty in the final result. Awesome.

Ours should be in my hot little hands in a matter of days if all is well - I absolutely can't wait to shoot with it. All of you guys in the UK / Europe who want to try it out, I'm here for you... Call me :P

And oddly, I've had a big music video shoot on the board since about one week before the announcement of the Monochrome Epic -- the video, because of this MUVE project, was already signed off to be shot monochrome, 5K. Looking forward to it.
