Hello, We have a MacPro Dual 6 Core Xeon at 2.66GHz
running LION 10.7.4
NVidia GeForce GT 120 for Display
NVidia Quadro FX 4800 for GPU
We wish to add another GPU, for which a CUBIX expander chassis is necessary
Kindly advise on the best choice of new GPU and CUBIX chassis number please
Would a NVIDIA GTX 570 work here?
Or can we scrap the FX 4800 and use two GTX 570?
All input and expertise is greatly thanked

Hi, in your case, I would use the fx4800 for the UI GPU and put two GTX580 in the Cubix expander.
This will give you a significantly faster UI response and image processing. Note: it won't change your r3d decoding and debayer speed so you may consider a Rocket in your next upgrade.
Peter

And I believe the CUBIX can handle a few double height cards.

Hi Peter, thanks for the prompt reply. Can we use the fx4800 together with the GTX580 as GPUs, since we have the GT 120 for Display?
How about the performance of GT 120 for Display and the GTX580 as GPU, (which means removing the fx4800) Would this save us from buying a Cubix expander? In this case what would be the performance boost over the previous fx4800 config?
Or do we need two GTX580 , which then calls for a Cubix expander?

We only grade Sony F65 footage- do we still need a Rocket? Or is Rocket only for R3D?
Thank you and please excuse the numerous queries

Yep ROCKET is only for R3D.
I assumed since you are in REDUSER :)

Your FX 4800 is not really a good GPU for resolve. But because you're using a Mac, you can't put a GTX 580 in the actual tower chassis as there is neither room nor correct power for it. You can use the GT 120 for GUI and GTX 570 for GPU, and that should still perform better than the FX 4800, but will be considerably less GPU processing power than the 580.

I would suggest keeping the FX 4800 for GUI and putting 3x GTX 580 or 680 in a cubix expansion chassis. If you're not working with Red footage then there is no need for Redrocket as it is purely for decoding .R3D files and nothing else.

The other option (my preference) is to go PC, where you can get dual xeon or single i7 motherboards with more than enough PCI lanes and slots (and powersupplies) to handle 3 GPU without the need of an expansion chassis. I use Resolve in windows and find its performance, all else being equal, the same as that on the Mac.

best,

John T.

Thanks, John this was helpful
We are stuck with the Mac, so we require a CUBIX.
Which model of the expansion chassis do you use?
Is the GTX 680 superior to the GTX 580?
Happy grading!
