I recently picked up one of Cool Light's 1200 HMI's and thought I would share my thoughts here as I hadn't seen much about them. Disclosure that this is the first HMI I have owned, although I have worked on sets with them sparingly before as well.

I had long been looking for a way to get a strong focused light source that wouldn’t require a generator to power. HMI’s were of course the first and most obvious choice since LEDs and Fluorescents are great and have their place but just didn’t pack enough punch. Unfortunately price was a hindrance with HMI’s. As a small video production company in Reno, NV, there just weren’t any rental houses locally to rent on a per job basis so as with much of my business, I would need to own one if I wanted to have it as a regularly available tool for my productions. Arri’s 1200 HMI Par being well over $6000 for a kit just couldn’t be justified for the value it would bring to my business, so I needed an affordable solution. After heavily researching other brands and generic ebay knockoffs, reviews everywhere had just been horrible with units arriving broken, poor customer service overseas, etc. So when I found out Cool Lights had an affordable HMI unit available, my interest was high and at just over $3,500 for the kit (Lamp, Headcable, barndoors and Ballast) was financially doable too. However, in the interest in saving some money I found a used unit for sale here on Reduser that I quickly swooped up. It also included a lens kit which I believe Cool Lights offers if you contact them.

The light has been nothing short of fantastic and an incredibly versatile tool for my needs. Although not a small unit, it is quick and easy to setup. The ballast has three options for flicker free, 60hz, and 50hz. There is a small buzz at flicker free that winds down to still audible but very quiet at the other settings. Noise from the unit has not been an issue at all on any of our shoots so far. The ballast also includes a dimmer that takes the light down to almost 50% it seems like. The included headcable is well built, solid and does the job, however at about 10’ long, it is limited, I do wish they offered a longer option (which they might, it’s just not listed on their site). The lamphead is well built with a bulb lock and spot flood dial. I have only owned the unit for a few months but it seems strong and durable for a heavy use environment. The barndoors would slip closed when I first used them but a simple screw tightening has fixed the problem and they now stay in place wherever you set them. In full transparency, when I received my used light, there were some the of the yoke to lamphead washer pieces missing and the lamp head slips just a tad depending on how far you tilt it, but I would imagine this would be a simple remedy with a few washer type pieces… I just haven't had a chance to mess with it yet.

Versatility wise, I have used the light in a huge number of different ways. As a background color splash and moonlight simulation through a window, as a daylight source for an in studio greenscreen shot, as a bounce to bring room ambience up, for outdoor interviews and as just a nice soft talent source when shooting through diffusion. And that’s just in the first few months, so I’d imagine I’ll continue to find many many more uses for my new toy.

So I am very happy with the light itself but where the real value is is in the customer service department. Owner Richard and his team, especially Patrick have some of the best customer service I have come across when working with any company. Anytime I have had a question, concern or problem with either this light or any of their products, they have always been very quick to the call, ensuring I get what I need in time for productions. If something does happen to go wrong or get broken out in the field, I feel great knowing, that I have a reliable place stateside to go to to get things up and running again quickly. This compared to the ebay overseas companies where you are lucky to even get a response…

So in the end, if on a budget, I really can’t recommend this 1200 HMI unit from Cool Lights enough to anyone looking for an affordable but incredibly reliable entry into the market.

Here are a few shots of the HMI in use.

Tyler, Thanks for the review, I actually own one of the Chinese knock offs, I decided to take the plunge and give it a shot, slight gamble on my part. At first I had an issue with the light buzzing loudly, then I replaced the generic bulb they gave me with an Osram, and the issue went away. Some fan noise in the ballast, but to be honest I think the fan on my Scarlet is just as loud in the default fans settings. There is still a high pitch buzz, its not too loud, I'm thinking this is the case with most HMI's is that they have a buzz. I also think they used cheap paint, you could smell it a little as the light got hot, but I think it might go away with usage.

I spent a total of about 1500 with shipping, and the replacement bulb. It's also a 1200W Fresnel. For the price I was actually pretty amazed that it worked, and it seemed to work fine. I had it placed outside in the scene you see. It was running for a good 6 hours. Will it fail? I guess time will tell, but for now I'm getting pretty good results.

Thanks for that write up Tyler. I need to contact them at some point regarding 2 of my LED600 units dying, but the HMIs have peaked my interest for sure. I'll need to test them out soon.

Tyler: Thanks for the write up! Especially love the green screen shots.

Noel: We sold units like that in a beta test back in 2008 and while most all of them are still running, they are way too loud and they aren't hot restart. It was an experiment to see how people could deal with the noise from the ballast. We made the ballast to head cable a bit longer than normal to allow people to place them elsewhere. Yes they can be sold less expensively because their design is simpler. We finally decided on a more solid and stable solution and our ballast makes no noise at all and they are hot restart as well. There is some bulb noise but all electronic ballasts, running square wave output and high enough frequency to avoid flicker, will cause some resonance in the bulbs. As you correctly stated, the more expensive bulbs, like Osram and Philips have far less of this noise.

Phil: Sorry to hear about the issue. Just contact us any time, its probably nothing very complicated on the 600s and easy to get running again.

Richard , you're right it's not a hot restrike. I was curious as to whether or not it was the bulb or ballast that gives the light it's hot restrike capabilities but I guess you answered that question. It's probably good to let it cool for 15 minutes before starting it up again. I also added a UV gel, I'm not sure if the glass has any UV shielding. I was thinking about modifying the case and adding a larger fan. The fan they used is small. Based on my computer building experience a larger fan should quiet the noise.

Yes the ballast makes the difference. Also there is an ignitor in the head of hot restart units normally.

Larger fan could help or perhaps a motor speed control for the fan you have might do it.

UV filter is a good idea, many of those type units may not have any UV protection.

Great review!

I also have one of the Cool Lights 1.2kW HMI's in my kit. I find it to be one of best values for HMIs on the market today. I've brought it onto almost every shoot in the past couple months. My head cable has deteriorated a bit though. I'm also wondering if Richard sells longer or separate head cables.

Thanks Tyler! I have the CL-MF0150 and have been very curios to get the CL-MP1200 or the CL-MF0575. Thumbs up for posting the pictures aswell!

Thanks Phil, how did you like the LED600's before they died, they've been on my curious list for a while now too.

The LED600 is great as a rimlight.

Tyler, can you post a picture from the camera inside the room with the "faked" moonlight?

Thanks Joel,

That shot is behind the scenes from a Feature we shot this summer, so let me clear permission with Production to see if I can post a frame grab. We went heavier than usual with it for story reasons.

Thanks.

I like them. I've had mine for a while (years) and they feel "greener" and I gel warm, but damn I love their portability. I was using a 5 light kit here and there. I brought them to the lot for a shoot at Universal and everybody asked me questions about them. Even used them for some still work:

I ran 3 panels off a Honda EU2000i in the middle of the woods for that shoot.
