  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 1K at 120 FPS is not bad at all !

Hehe Paul, I believe you have an EPIC by your side anyways, don't you? :) So for these speciality shots, it's an easy choice if you can grab the big dog.

I do but often Epic is overkill, I tell this to people who just have "Epic" in their eyes. I am always like if it's for dramatic purposes maybe you need the high FPS, but Scarlet is an incredibly powerful camera. If you have lights and control it's really not always Epic I grab first.

Though M 1203 has a special place in my heart.

man that would be great. i know its been discussed/dissected ad nauseum, but i would be ELATED if the Dragon upgrade got the scarlet to an Epic (non dragon) Lite. 3k @120fps. 4k at 48-60 fps. i don't think i would buy another camera or even upgrade, at LEAST until the next RED upgrade.

I agree, not much difference , in my eyes, between 120 and 200 fps, at least for the work I do, and having that 3k res edge, would be more important to me..

Friend of mine doin' a little throwin... This was with a canon zoom - extremely soft (even with excessive artificial sharpening). Obviously, it's probably only resolving just above standard definition due to the the OLPF/Debayer - and that's without the lens, which is really what we're seeing here.

Well spoken, Paul.

I see the advantage of high fps more in commercial shoots than in storytelling but even then a smooth picture doesn't necessarily make a better one.

Nice video, Paul. I'm a huge Blue Jays fan as well so here's wishing your friend success with his career too!

Can someone please explain quality and sharpness difference between fs700 hd at 240fps and epic at 240fps 2k? Not considering raw but my understanding is fs700 would be sharper always because it uses full 4k chip downscalled to 1080p whereas epic would be a crop of sensor? Is that correct?

1k is more than enough in normal situations where you don't need to crop or zoom when you are editing.. By the way, is the tint in your posted still image a little too shifted towards the red or is just me.. Sorry, I corrected it a little bit to my taste..

Here is the stuff I shot last weekend for more testing. At beach and skate board park.
Shooting at 1K is tricky, even with the 8mm focal length. Shooting skaters is good for building skills for run and gun.
Shot 1K mode at both 120 fps and 90 fps. I cropped extra wide and post processed to 2K resolution.

Tell me what you think ! ( this ain't your grandpas post processing here, he he, check the detail visible )

youtube ( select 'original' resolution for 2K ) : http://youtu.be/UD-DhqUc3JM

Cheers

I think it's great Les, but I wouldn't want to keep pulling out the OLPF on location shoots. Too many things could go wrong there. Might consider it on a studio slo-mo shoot, though.

How are you processing the footage? Looks nice and crisp without being artificially sharp, and the detail is there (although gamma is a little too saturated/red)

Doug,
Yep, running without low pass is like driving fast without insurance! But it sure is fun.
Much of post processing is custom image processing stuff. I actually threw a bit of tone mapping on it as well, I like the pop it gives me.
I may be posting some 6K footage soon. You can extrapolate image quality by looking at this 'shot at ' 1K version.
The odd thing I've just realized is that while the camera is well known for high resolution cinematography, there seems to be very few examples of that posted here in 4K for us to look at.
YouTube video doesn't count when showing 4K, they seem to have slashed the quality down a bunch lately.
Perhaps RED can be so kind as to provide a unified mechanism to show off the work?
Enough HD video Vimeo posts, already! ;)

maybe this is a silly question....wouldn't it make more sense to shoot 2k 60fps and use twixtor for most projects? i know that things can get pretty ugly but.....?

Samir,
It was the Sigma 8-16mm . I wish they made a 4mm version ! ;)

Les,

That looked very good considering the post-processing required. Which brand of lens did you use? Rokinon, Sigma or other?

I can add Twixtor as needed to 1K, 2K, 4K, etc , so this could have been 240 fps with the same amount of 'Twixtoring' , if you will....

Paul, here are a few tips for your friend that he can obviously take or leave.

1. When driving forward, the right butt cheek/hip leads the way, so the right knee should swing open rather late.

2. Land more on the ball of the of the front foot with the toe pointing towards the target.

3. There should be a point when the left hand is high and about to come forward when the back of the left hand is just about facing the catcher.

4. Drive the glove hand straight back with the palm facing upward.

Best of luck to him!
