Scarlet Deal of a Lifetime

I wouldn't say that I have been "anti-Red" in the past but I have taken my share of potshots. I was a little frustrated with the whole 3K for $3K thing. That was the only Red option that would fit my budget at the time. So yes, I was bitter. Sure, I wanted 4K/Raw as much as anyone else, but I just couldn't swing it. So I built, I worked, I saved, and I built some more. Never with Red in mind. I always ASSUMED some other company would be the one to get my hard earned cash.

The competition never delivered. Just being honest. Red won me over where it matters. Price, specs, upgrade path. That's it. I don't care how you do business. The tactics I once viewed as borderline arrogant are exactly what I should cherish in the company that I invest in. You guys DO really care about the customer. All along it felt like you didn't but that's just because I was on the other side. I hadn't bought in.

Anyways, I'm getting mushy. It's late and I am ecstatic. I have waited four years to own my first Red product and I couldn't be happier. I'm a proud new father and her name is "Scarlet". Going to put some Zeiss Ultra Primes on and go film nature for a few days. Heaven.

Really awesome to see so many people jumping at this deal. You guys won't regret it.

Can someone outline what I need to shoot.

You'll need a battery adapter if you want to use V mount. Check out WC or Viewfactor. There are may options with Red's own Redbricks etc or Red volt battery modules.

I'd recommend getting a touchscreen LCD. A lot of people skipped that (when Scarlet first hit) and went to use an external monitor and another control system (like a side handle), but, IMO, it's better to have the basic touchscreen. It's also easier to learn the system by navigating around this way.

I'd also say get a side handle, as it's good to have a second input system and the side handle also takes a small Redvolt battery (which kicks in when you swap out your larger batteries).

When I received my Epic, it was with a Touchscreen only - the Side Handle and Redmote didn't come for a while.

So, bare bones basic would be a battery adapter and a 5" Touchpanel. Additional would be a Sidehandle or Redmote for secondary control.

You'll also need a couple of Redmag SSD cards and and a Redmag Reader (they come in different flavours depending on what you want).

I'd also suggest CS6 for editing RAW without transcoding etc. In terms of first light correction, you can do it all in RCX (free).

I've seen your posts on DVX, so I know you've all the other support gear & lenses required.

Hope you have fun & get one at this deal price - it's so much better than trying to build picture profiles and working with baked in data on other cameras :)

I love the highlight roll off and also the fact that I choose to add sharpening (etc) - many more creative options throughout the process.

I have been a huge fan of RED for years now but I have never posted, but now after the great news today I have a RED on the way. Thanks so much to the RED team for always pushing everything beyond the limit to get the best cameras out there. And now the fun begins.

You'll need a

Thanks for this detailed reply. Indeed I have 3smallHD etc!

Do you think I could go redmote only

Beyond that the package is too costly (to me)

I will mainly be shooting 3k 25p 1/50 and manual ap nikon glass with canikon converter on each lens - cant see that I need many controls during the shoot day only FirmWare and the like

Will swap to 4k for wide shots . Do you need to change the ISO or is ISO a 'myth'
And change framerate/res on occasion

That is an amazing deal. Might try to scrape together some money so our EPIC can get a little sister

Wow, what an incredible deal! Guess we'll be keeping our scarlet now as its resale just went down the tubes haha. For all you new owners who buy in, I suggest start saving for an Epic now because once you get the Red bug, Epic comes knocking on your door.
