  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can you record sound at 24.98 fps?

The sound channels dissapear and it just says "Varispeed". Also, I tried and no sound recorded. Is there something I am missing?

Correct, you have told the Epic/Scarlet that you are over/under cranking which does not record audio.

thanks for the info, i got it :)

25P is PAL.

I need to record sound with the Scarlet, and I live in Argentina, "PAL" land. But my project Time Base settings only allows me to work with 25fps, not 24.98. Even though it isn´t a significant difference, how come?

24.98 does not exist and I hope no one will ever invent such a thing.

I'll kill him. :emote_hanged:

PS: Be happy to work in a PAL land! 25P (or 50p) is the future. DCP are already done in 25P.

I just recorded footage where my frame rate (23.97) does not match my record rate (29.97).

the result is that my footage is slightly slo-mo, is there anyway to convert my footage so that it plays normally?

I already record in 25 fps because I live in a PAL region but, just because I want to learn more, why not 24.98?

24.98...does not compute! Drop frame only exists in NTSC land. Read up about the history of SMPTE here if you are so inclined.

FYI- (Never do this but it could happen to you) If you record audio at 23.98 and camera at 29.97 or vice versa, there won't be a drift. The time code will be way off, but the audio will lock if you synch it manually.

What does 24.98 really give you over 25fps? It is basically a 1 frame difference every ~42 seconds. And then you have the nightmare of audio sync with drift. The whole .1% is due to the NTSC system being 29.97 (30fps x 1000/1001). It is best advised to keep whole numbers with whole numbers and fractions with fractions - so 24fps becomes 23.976 (24 x 1000/1001). 25 x 1000/1001 would become 24.975...

Basically no reason to do it -

In 50Hz countries (like all of Europe and most of South America and Asia), 25fps makes a lot more sense. The only possible exception would be a feature with a major theatrical release on film. Even then, one can make a case for shooting at 25fps and then creating a 25fps DCP for theaters, which can in theory work.

My advice to the o.p. would be to talk to a post-production specialist, like a post house or a post-production supervisor, and have them determine the most appropriate frame rate for your production. 24.98fps makes absolutely no sense, in my opinion; 25, sure. And many American-based films shoot digitally at 23.98fps.
