  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M Monochrome

If you had a 3-way beamsplitter you could do the full 3-strip. and the images would be awesome.

Why does everyone keep saying that a 3-strip emulation would be 'awesome'. Until recently almost every digital video camera used a beam splitter. It looked... not especially awesome or different.

Except for the resolution hit your current Epic is essentially a 3 strip emulation. Just don't de-bayer.

yeah, little bit overhyped. but, technically, it would be better. not worth the hassle/cost to me.

Technically, it would be better.

Would it? There is a reason nobody is making a s35mm prism, you have to deal with lots of optical errors, not to mention the distance for each color is slightly different introducing more chromatic aberration etc. Just shooting stereo through a mirror results in tons of polarization artifacts and discrepancies that requires extensive cleanup. I would bet that any resolution gain from 3 chips would be immediately cancelled out from the mirror or prism rig.

It will be extrodinery if we colorize the frame

It will be extrodinery if we colorize the frame

Having colorized more than 20 international feature films I always dreaming of colorizing some clean, sharp, excellent gray-scaled, hi-res images. Naturally I have never seen anything anywhere near to my dream. Now I know it is possible...yes..it is possible to colorize those extraordinary images from this wonderful camera. Can I have at least one 4K frame please to see how it holds out colorization process. If only we color some portions in the image...the options will be enormous.

I hope some Montreal rental houses get some- seems an awesome rental item I would hire often (but not enough to buy it.)

Why not add a pattern of "ND filters" on the sensor to get up to 4 stops more than current technology?

Like
[-0][-2][-0][-2][-0][-2]
[-2][-4][-2][-4][-2][-4]
[-0][-2][-0][-2][-0][-2]
[-2][-4][-2][-4][-2][-4]
[-0][-2][-0][-2][-0][-2]
[-2][-4][-2][-4][-2][-4]

The debayer process is similar to the one of the RGB one, but it has shadow noise floor lowered [-0 stop], midtones infos [-2] and highlight protection [-4].
if the native ISO sensitivity is 2000 you will have a like 50% of the area at ~1000 ISO and the 25% at ~500 ISO.

All of that without using HDRx (that is 6+ stops over this).

Since I'm a colorist and I prefer decide later what kind of BW image obtain (where is the advantage of RAW with this camera?!) I think that 30% more dynamic range is better than 30% resolution.

Holy crap, why did I not think of that? That is brilliant! To add to that: you won't even have to interpolate tones (my term - because obviously there is no bayer filter to debayer) if you're using 4K as an oversampled master for a 2K delivery. IOW those four pixels will be merged instead of having their tones interpolated.

Yes, maybe develope some other debayer setting then...

@REDTeam, if possible, I want to partecipate at the development of it ;)

Good thinking Karim.. but that wont work. Pixels are not isolated like that, As soon as the Non-ND pixel was full it would spill over and start filling the pixels around it, there is no "lid" on them.

I'm looking forward to learning about the spectral response of this bad boy, and how it compares to or differs from, or improves upon, the panchromatic type emulsion. Even though dialed out color was getting pretty decent, skin tones (among other things) should be something else on this monochromatic dedicated sensor. Not to mention the added control provided for by filter options. Very exciting development.
