  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Battery Belt-Clip works wih Global Media. I use it with 3 240WH batteries. I never used all of them. Besides there is a thread which explains to mount the Battery-Belt-Clip to the back of the camera :)

I use both. REDvolts & V-mount. Best of both options like most here.

I agree with Paul, this "poll" is corrupt from the get-go. "Expensive Redvolts" vs "Inexpensive V-mounts" is a poor attempt to sway an outcome. Must be an election year.

As for batteries, my reaction is, who cares? Use whatever works best for you. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Way too much "me too" going on in these communities. Right now I'm using the Redvolt XL's and they're working great. Are they the best form-factor? No. But they're pretty good. Are V-mounts a good form-factor? Hardly. It's a giant wart sitting on the back of the camera. But then again, so are the Redvolts. They're all necessary evils and compromises of what is available now.

If you don't like the Redvolts, buy V-mounts. Simple, done. Why do we need a poll to see what we already know, most people are using AB or V-mounts vs Redvolts. And each one has a perfectly plausible defense for their choice.

Two things care:
1. Necessity of changing buttery very often.
2. Money

If money is quite not a problem of course you can buy 16 Redvolts for 8 hours but 3000 for power it is a lot. And even in this case you have to change battery every 30 minutes it is very not comfortable whatever. Compactness is cool but powering is more cool!

You do realize there are other Redvolts besides the size that fit in the handles, right? The XL's last around 90 minutes each, so that's about three hours using the quad module. Rotate them with two others and that's four batteries for unlimited running. Your bias for V mount batteries is extremely evident, so no need for a poll. You prefer the V mounts, and there is nothing wrong with that decision. But the difference you're trying to imply is not as great as you suggest. 16 standard Redvolts for eight hours is misleading because you would be able to recharge them in less time, ready for reuse.

You could rephrase the question..

New Volts and Volt XL's that is designed and built for the new modular cameras or old, brick sized heavy, V locks?

I can only say that I love the side handle, I love the quad battery module, the Quad charger, the traveling charger and everything about the new batteries and I think that Red further down the line will have more things coming for this concept. I think they will make a power out solution, a Red volt belt, a red volt clip etc. I do not think that they will start producing small red V lock batteries...

On the other hand big bulky batteries also have their advantages, having a pellicase with built in carbattery and 12Vcharger on the studio floor next to the camera or strapped to the dolly is quite convenient as well and it does not cost much to make, it also last much longer than any of the above...

90wh redvolts and the quad module are significantly larger than a 180wh v-mount battery. V-Mount sits closer to the center of gravity of the camera which makes it more hand-holdable even with a v-mount than a huge gangly quad module hanging off the back. I would pick up 4 redvolts for when you're just walking around and as a fail-over for replacing v-mounts but stick to v-mounts or AB for the majority of shooting.

Even though RedVolts last for 30 mins. it shouldn't mean you'd need 12 Volts for 6 hours, or am I wrong?! Why wouldn't you send them for charge while one is working?

Often shootings are outdoor and often it is not easy to find electricity.

Most of shootings are outdoor and often it is not easy to find electricity.

If most of your shoots are outdoors away from electricity then you would need to cover your needs with batteries, whichever flavor you desire. But to say it is that way for all would be a misrepresentation. Most of my shooting is done near electricity or some form of electrical supply, so I can recharge all day long. To each his own. You also might consider the Blueshape line of batteries.

The best solution for me was to have both.

I have both and configure based on what I'm shooting / where I'm going to be. I can get through a 12+ hour day with 2 XL's and 4 single volts with 2 quad chargers and 0 sweat worrying about running out of juice.

(I even plug it in to house power every once in a while also.)
