  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looks great.
What motors and flight controller did you use.

Thank you :) I't was very fun building, but waaaaaay more fun flying then I could imagine!! It's stable in the sky and flying 400 feet up is no problem with any weight. Just heavier make shorter flytime. We used large Tiger motors with low KV, about 500, and as large props we could fit, and compensated with 5 cell betterys. It have a DJI wookong carfully fine tuned, and oversized speed controllers so they can handle burst of many amps for fast climbs.

Janne thanks for all of the info about your set up. We also have an Octocopter that we are trying to get all worked out. Our problem is our motors are getting so hot flying an epic that they begin to smoke. Can you lead me in the
right direction of the size and type of motor and prop set up you are using? batteries?
Thanks Janne

Ouer goal was to fly doubble Epic for 3D and we tried to make sure everyting was as powerful as is could be and low weight. No good if a speed controller for $20 burn up in flight making it all crash down. The parts costed about 10 000 euro and then the designer Johan spent many hours fine tuning everything. If a motor gets warm is's either running to fast (to small props) or so slow (to big props) because there is no gear box here, the motor KV and props size I guess is the secret sauce. But for lifting Epic bigger motor is better, then this needs bigger batt also. But bigger is also heavier and soon the advantage is gone, so the total rig balace is important. We have not tested it's top speed yet but it will do 60km/h.

Most of the aerials we have shot over the last year with our large SRH's and the Epic have been output without post stabilization. If the builder knows what they are doing the same should apply for a heavy lift MR. One of the main advantages of flying the Epic is at 5K, you can afford the minor loss of resolution and real estate that comes with stabilization so it is a non issue typically. We have been able to get clean usable footage in winds up to 25 mph using warp but the whole rig weighs 40 lbs and is insanely stable.

By far the most important component with these systems is the pilot/builder. I see lots of comments about people wanting one. If you are not an experienced expert in flying these aircraft, there is a 99.9% chance it won't end well. It takes years to hone all the skills needed. There are countless ways to do this stuff wrong and only one way to do it exactly right, and you have to do it exactly right, every single time you go out.

Nice rig, but we selected the tiger motors in advantage over the axi because the tigers where about half weight and had more power... and also lower price. We have 12 batt, with 3 batt you will only get a shot or two. Ouer rig uses 2 batt at the time and run about 10 min with a 7D/5D and about 7 min with Epic.

It looks great. I have the same question as Matthew about the degree of stabilization required in the post.

With lighter cameras when it's windy, you need to do post stabilization, but with Epic when it's low wind it's perfectly smooth. It behaves very similar to a steadicam, I little woble, but usually plesant movement.

if you can carry 2 Epic's you might be able to use a Cineron head with a single Epic which would be incredible on a octo.
