  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Realistic pricing?

I bought literally just about everything I own here including my full Red MX package from this very site/section so yes this is a very busy section and gets tons of sales on a daily basis

also should state many/most red owners take exceptional care of their things so that a large percentage of the stuff you get is basically mint/brand new condition so even a saving of a hundred or two is a good deal. Keep in mind you're not paying tax either so if something costs $2000 at B&H but you get it 1800 used from someone else you're actually saving closer to 400-600 not 200 because you'd be paying tax at an actual retailer

I hate it when someone asks, "What's the lowest price you'll take"? I also hate it when people think their gear is worth new prices after they have used it a bunch of times. I just bought a really nice 08 Mercedes that looks brand new, but realistically it was over $30,000 off of brand new price. That is how it's done in the auto market because it is a fairly regulated market with "blue book" pricing that gets people to lower the price from what they think their vehicle is worth to what the fair market value is. The online sales venue is not typically like that. But if you wait around the price will come down, and then it's a fight to buy the item before someone else does.

that's true jon. I hate seeing good lenses going for almost same price as new when they have an obvious scratch or defect that the owner admits to etc. Sorry but I'm not going to pay almost brand new price if you scratched up the lens

Not sure if you really mean "regulated" when you talk about the used car market because, of course, it's not. It may be a more liquid market and there is more information available, but it is certainly not regulated, at least in terms of pricing.

People are naive when they pay almost new price for second hand items, unless there are some strange circumstances involved, local pick-up, out of stock items, etc...

I've often been able to buy new items for the same price of several year old items... i.e. an Arri Follow Focus and some gear for just slightly more, maybe 5% more of broker prices, with full guarantee and nice and shining condition straight from the factory... a lot of used gear seems to go for unreasonable prices...

This is an interesting thread for me as I am selling a Scarlet Package. I have gotten many replies in which people tell me that they want to buy - I jump through hoops and in the end they don't have the funds to purchase. I have had people get mad at me because the package did not include something that they thought it should. I met with one person to show the package only to have the person tell me that "I already own several cameras, why do I need to buy another one."

I think that people are now used to sites like craigslist. There is no difference (in some minds) between a resale of high end gear that is well maintained and a neighborhood yard sale.

Currently I am asking 23% less than the List price and people are ANGRY that I would do such a thing - offer a package that is new - never used - for 23% off retail price.

What is the percentage discount that people would consider fair (with the assumption that the gear is in mint condition?)

Damnit Tim, why didn't you just list your prices...just bought a used Scarlet for 25 percent off lmfao...

If its a "NEW" hard to get item like an EPIC or Ultra/Master Primes then retail or close to it is acceptable!!! It's items that have been used on income earning jobs that should be considered used and sold as used! Even stuff thats never been used but is readily available needs to be deeply discounted... Market dictates!!! In my case I am not motivated to buy a used Mantis no matter how mint for $1850 if I can buy a factory fresh for $1995... SSD at 10% off??? Not motivated!!! Clutch for $4k Not Motivated!!! Just me!!!!

All that being said, I have been setoff a couple of times seeing the low balls on the Epic X packages... even madder when people sell them at stupid low prices lowering the overall value for all of us!!!

Cheers,
Prio
