  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone know a designer with "2D Picture to 3D effect" experience?

We do a lot of whats called imaged based 3D modeling. i.e we separate the image into layers and map them up on 3D models so we can animate a virtual camera within the scene.
We started to do this 14 years ago and the first project we did was a maxwell video see link:

and then we done several such projects and we also use a massive amount of image based modeling all trough our work see showreel at:

Most of the animated animals, like the lizards, and such are made with this tech.

Hey,
I'm an editor based out of Atlanta, and I do this kind of work all the time. This is one I did two years ago that shows a pretty wide range:

(the first shot is video, everything else is made up of stills)
I can do it all myself and have done it enough to streamline the process. I can also incorporate video, 3d elements, 3d lights, texts, or whatever else you might want.
Shoot me an email at countdonoho@gmail.com if you are interested.
Thanks!

I am looking for an animator who experience with the 2D to 3D effect below. Anyone have a reliable vendor or artist they could recommend?
You want somebody who has the tools to do "occluded surface reconstruction," where they can pull out foreground details and fill in the missing background, like for animating still photographs. I think the first time I ever saw that done was on the 2002 documentary The Kid Stays in the Picture, and it definitely takes the "Ken Burns Effect" to the next level.

Any good visual effects artist or company will have five or six different pieces of software that can do this -- After Effects, Nuke, Combustion, etc. I'd ask to see a demo reel and also find somebody who can determine your expectations, budget, and schedule. This kind of thing can easily go from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more), depending on the number of shots, the quality expected, and the amount of time available.

This effect is actually fairly easy if your background is consistent, such as water, grass or clouds. Just cut out your subject using the quick select tool in photoshop and put them on a separate layer. On the background layer paint over your subject using the clone stamp tool, painting over the clouds, grass, etc... then import into after effects and 3D the layers, then move your subjects Zdepth. Create a camera with a 50mm lens and key frame the position and point of interest. With a consistent background I can get it done in about 5 min. Other than that it gets very tedious, your pretty much recreating or redrawing all the details in the background.

I could imagine if you had planned for this before you took your photos it would be a lot easier. You could use a tripod, create a background plate, then move your subjects into place, you could even use a green screen behind them to make the process of masking them out even easier.
