  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

scarlet future firmware wishlist

Actually, a 4:3 @ 4k chip height would be great for anamorphic work..... 2800x2100, it comes out to 5.8MP. Less than 4k....

A full 3600x2700 @ lower compression could be cool too...... if at all possible.

+1

Not for anamorphic adapters though, but because I love 4:3 ! :o)
In fact, I have two projects coming up sooner or later that I would like to shoot 4:3...

50p in 2k.

And IF RED Gets 4k 24fps hdrx to work, wouldn't it also be possible to get 5k 24fps without hdrx? Even at some lower compression radio's? That would be great, if possible with current hardware...

I'm thinking their wizards can squeeze some more out of the current scarlet even w/o dragon upgrade.
I think the heat is on now with NAB coming up and other 4K cameras on the horizon, especially that sony FS700 (even though it is not 4K out of the box...nor RAW :tongue_smilie:) But if the sony cam comes in aroudn 10k, they will be put in the same price bracket as scarlet on paper (not counting 'real' cost for necessary accessories).

Here's hoping for the 4K 24fps HDRx upgrade at some point.

Great thread!

+1 Phantom power

Delete clips in camera.

Indulging in some pure speculation, apologies if a bit off-topic ...

Depending on how much space there is in reserve for firmware growth, deleting clips (files) might take extra code and engineering resources better spent elsewhere for now. Assuming nothing else has any reason to delete files, deleting might not be implemented in the FAT filesystem code in-camera. Implementing delete can be hard and might lead to a fragmented volume, leading to performance issues. Better to just allocate+write until full and reformat and start over, eliminating any such worries. BTW, implementing a pre-record looping feature requires some of this kind of work too. With the kinds of data rates we're talking here ...

I also wonder if phantom power is possible with just a firmware upgrade: surely if there's the hardware, they would have enabled that in the camera firmware already. I fear an external solution will continue to be necessary.

EDIT: Page 163 of the Scarlet manual (3.0) mentions phantom power, so looks like I am wrong -- hopefully it will be enabled soon. :-)

Ok, sorry everyone for speculating on engineering issues ...

I would really like to be able to map focus to the dial on the side handle. That way I could hold the camera in two hands and pull focus without having to have a hand on the lens.

There was talk about enabling HDRx in 4k 24fps but from my understanding it was primarily dependent upon the X frame containing redundant data that could not be recorded so as to fit within the bitrate limitation. So it does seem to imply that Scarlet is capable of higher pixel rates just not higher codec bitrates. It may not be simple math though, since by the math, Scarlet is capable of at least 240MP/s given 4kHD@30fps and 3k@48fps. That would imply that it could do 110fps at 2k... More if 4k@48fps/HDR is possible

Clean video feed without borders.
any more high speed they could give us.
phantom power
hdsdi and hdmi simultaneously.

audioplayback plz.

and some higher fps
240 fps @ 2k to fight against the fps on the sony fs700.

i dont want to buy a sony fs700 only of the framerates...

please red :) firmawareupdate during the ibc?

greetings

Hopefully Scarlet can find some way to compete with the FS700 on the framerate front. If HDRx is possible at 4k@24fps, then that might indicate Scarlet can do 420MP/s and that 3k@84fps and 2k@192fps could also be possible. It's still less 1/4 of what the FS700 will be capable of, but its something.

Have the ability to enter in a fixed resolution guide frame that always stays the same no matter what recording resolution you are shooting, for those times when you're shooting a straight to web video and only need a max of 1080. So if you want to shoot 4K to leave plenty of room for reframming and cropping in post, or for VFX tracking shots, stabilization.

I.E. I'd like a fixed resolution guide at 2048x1024. I start shooting 4K, the guide appears as small box in the center. I switch to 3K for some HDR, the guide is still sized at 2048x1024 pixels, now a little larger in 3K. Then I switch to 2K for some slow-mo, again, guide remains same pixel dimensions.

You can sort of do this now with the user frame guides and title/action safe by manually calculating in a resize percentage.

On the fps when you go up it automatically changes the shutter speed but when you change down with fps the shutter stys the same..? I would like that goes back to the normal shutter speed.

On framerates

On framerates

I was wondering the other day about the framerates you get with the Scarlet-X. I mean, it's all about bandwidth, right? So one would assume that how ever many pixels per second the camera can handle at one resolution, it would be able to handle in any other.

At 4K 30fps it's 4096*2160 pixels 30 times per second for a total of 265 420 800 pixels per second (at 16-bit sampling that's 4 246 732 800 bits per second).

At 2K we get 60fps, but that's only 132 710 400 (2048*1080*60) pixels per second, or about half of what the hardware can process at 4K.

Is there something here that I'm not taking into account? Does any metadata that's saved for each frame add a lot to the overhead?

In any case, I would say my future firmware wishlist for the Scarlet-X is 19fps@5K, 32fps@QHD, 53fps@3K, 120fps@2K and 480fps@1K.

And oh, please don't read this like I'm whining about why I'm not getting these framerates. I bought the camera knowing the specs and I'm perfectly happy with my purchase. I would, however, be even more happy if later on I got a few additional frames per second to play with :)

EDIT: And oh, also 30fps@4.5K (2.33:1)

I believe you can change your shutter mode to angle instead of exposure time, that way, it will always have a exposure time relative to your shutter speed, for instance, if you have a 180 degree shutter angle, your exposure time it will always be half of your frame rate.

I think everyone has to be reasonnable about the Scarlet X.

What I want is power management (very soon)
Widescreen for many resolution : 3kWS, 4KWS and 4,5kWS. I think there is no way to have 5k by now even if it is possible by some tricks. We will have it with dragon.
The widescreen format is a big deal for RED, we could record more time with our ssd, and that a good point for all (producer and consumer)!!! and this will be not enought gain in time to stop the selling.

I hope RED will heard that and not be trought stupid demands like 5K !

PS: I hope you will ask the same as me ^^ we prove that asking for power management enought louder make them move faster : )

I am happy with the camera getting closer the the specs that were promised and in some cases already improved. I completely get the Scarlet vs Epic division in deliverable specs.
- power management
- 4K 24 HDRx
- any addition to higher frame rates would be a total bonus.

Good to know! Makes sense. But it would be nice for it to hold your angle when setting it by exposure time as well.

:-)

a few wishes have been heard, 3k 50 fps and hdrx for europeans at 25 fps are still remaining unheard...
ws and 2:1 in all resolutions will come hopefully in the next firmware releases.

cheers
