  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rates for set photographers ?

Actually maybe for US residents and people fluent in english ,it's easy to find, but i'm not from around here...

Assuming "all over the map" means "easy to find because it's everywhere" (?) If you have some keywords I could use i would be really grateful :)

I occasionally do stills out here in LA and abroad. Union minimum last year was $33 an hour I believe. That said, I always make above union minimum. The still guys I know and am friends with also make more than me due to their experience level and abilities. A couple of those guys have been doing it as long as I've been alive. On set still photography out here in LA is one of the more guarded and secretive professions and the hourly/day rate will vary greatly depending on who you are hiring.

"all over the map" just means that the rates are all over the place, e.g., they vary greatly depending on who it is and their skill level. :) that's like saying the prices for all the cameras released at NAB are "all over the map", some cost $12k and shoot 4k, some cost $85k and shoot 1080 ;)

"All over the map" means you don't know because it varies so wildly.

"His work was 'all over the map', sometimes it was great and sometimes it was garbage."
"Home prices are all over the map, I can find a nice 2 bedroom for $100k but then I found a 1 bedroom condo for $1,000,000, I don't know what to think."

EDIT: Whoops late. ;)

But yeah, it does apply to more than just prices. For example, as I used to shoot on a Canon 7D, I could say "DSLR filmmakers work is all over the map. Sometimes it's shot well and nicely composed, sometimes it's paper-thin depth of field and over-saturated"

Just to give you an idea, 6 years ago I was offered on Set photography work for a Film, not too big of a budget, paid was 1k per day, I of course ddi nt take the job, as it is not what I did, but that was not a big pay either, so for good photographers expect to pay.

In Europe is one $200 per day, sadly salaries in Europe are ridiculously cheap across the board.

Bérenger,

Even if you're hiring foreign photographers, you'll have to respect French laws if you're shooting and producing in France. That said, it's not that difficult to find a good photographer who would accept to cover your shooting for a global and reasonable price. Unless everyone is overpaid on your movie, of course. But at $500 per week you can get really good photographers. Paying a daily rate should be avoided.
