It is way more than just a 4K Raw thing. It is about everything going forward in the least painful way possible.

Jim

Sorry, I was thinking a little bit further than this 4K raw thing ;-) Anyway, I saw on red.com that you set up a partnership in Muenchen (Gecko-Cam) for repairs and support. That's great and a really good choice !

When I first researched REDUSER I never went to RECON. Then I discovered these "philosophy speeches / check-ups" Jim posts semi regularly. I now check RECON daily for them.

Why? Sometimes after a passionate speech/thread, the thread comes down, never to be found again, a fleeting glimpse into the mind and spirit of Jim. Usually late at night and always inspiring.

Who deletes them? I suspect a close friend watches Jim's back. I on the other hand love his passionate/aggressive nature with competitors. I admire Jim's boldness and truth. I believe we are all better for it. Imaging a world without RED.

"Red is the color of war, armor up."

RED is the color of life. Of passion. Of aggression. And war. It is the color of love... and excitement, speed and strength. What other color is there? :-)

Just put RECON in your Google rss reader. You will be the first to know and Google caches the threads even when it gets deleted ;-)

Oh and one other thing: Jim, that Scarlet is a great camera, keep on doing what you are doing!

Would love to some form of Publication maybe a regular e-magazine.
Up todate / Informed / No noise / Just the facts / Inspirational stories.

this is a brilliant idea. Mainstream advertising will surely make you money but rest assured it will cheapen the brand. The professionals will start slipping away, waiting for the next secretive pro-tool. it is what it is. REd is already currently the most popular camera known to serious professionals worldwide. most individuals and facilities owning Alexas also own Reds, Canons, etc. There are many times any filmed media situations where uber resolution and raw trump all.

Computers and workflows are getting faster. Editing R3D's is now a breeze. CS6, FCPX, smoke, and lightworks are promising faster and realer time playback with off the shelf hardware (lightpipe, thunderbolt) whats there to really advertise.

And Oakley... 100%. Just give us a second...

Its a tricky situation. On the one hand I would love for you to advertise, on the other hand I have a question.

Will Red advertising in the main stream help or hurt our businesses?

We believe in more resolution at every step. We believe in more dynamic range with every upgrade. We believe in higher frame rate options. We believe in smaller packages...

And we believe that our customers should be our long-lasting friends... not our victims.

If somebody asked me, I would say, they not only believe in this but also act accordingly.

All my expectations have been exceeded since got R1. At that point did not even dream there is ever going to be an upgrade program towards even a better camera.

RED is great, pretty darned expensive, definitely the top end of the business, BRILLIANT.

1080p is not obsolete. Neither is RGB. Only if you are filming stuff that you'll still want to use 10 years from now is 1080p even getting close to"obsolete".

I mean, even today SD interlaced isn't totally obsolete.. it's just crap LOL. 1080p is more than good enough for loads of delivery today.. if you need to care about tomorrow then okay you should worry about 4K, 8K, 3D..

Just about the time you have settled into your favorite 1080P camera and think all is well in the world... you look up and discover that 1080P is an obsolete format. Seemingly overnight (if you haven't really been paying attention). 4K (or greater) acquisition and 4K delivery are here. Up-rezzing 5 times is really not a good option.

The clues have been there for quite awhile... even since 2005 when Arri posted that 2K film scans weren't enough... and encouraged 4K scans.

Technology is moving at a high rate of speed. Everything seems to be going obsolete before your eyes. One month there is an announcement of the new Canon cinema C300. 4 months later it is the C500. 1080P just went to 4K. You barely had time to settle in.

There are many 4K cameras that just got announced. Great news for the industry! Which one should I buy/use? What about workflow? Options... choices.

One thing for sure... if you are a Professional, you have to pay attention. That is part of the definition.

We applaud all the new developments. Everything is getting better. It is just getting more complex and expensive as a result.

RED differentiates itself by trying to make it a bit easier. Buy into the system and upgrade your way along as the future unfolds. Upgrade what you need when you want. Sensors, recording media, batteries, monitoring and workflow.

And you can't go wrong shooting RAW. It never goes obsolete. New color science discoveries always apply to RAW. You aren't trapped. Recording to an RGB codec is as obsolete as 1080P.

We anticipated this new world of technology as it relates to image capture. We designed our program around the concept of "everything can and will be made better". Starting with REDCODE RAW and sensor advancement.

We believe in more resolution at every step. We believe in more dynamic range with every upgrade. We believe in higher frame rate options. We believe in smaller packages...

And we believe that our customers should be our long-lasting friends... not our victims.

Sorry... disagree. I guess I have for the past decade.

If you want your stuff to "be good enough" for now, you are right. But do you really want your prized footage to be important in the future? Imagine you have your best work on SD. Or looking forward... 1080P?

Jim

I don't believe RED needs to advertise. People seeking quality and professional gear will find their way to to RED.

The best advertising is word of mouth and it spreads like wildfire.

I have my best work on SD. I can't even take decent stills for promo work. Since I went RED, I left my best work only to come back to it years later, this time with an "EPIC" approach. I figure I've got 5 years at world class quality. Maybe 10.

I think what people need to consider is what they might want to do with their films 10 years from now. Look at all the old movies shot on film that were put on VHS for people to watch at home, then LaserDisc, then DVD, then Blu-ray, and now who know what is next. We'll probably be streaming 4K from the Internet before we know it, and now we can shoot at 5K (soon 6K) and hopefully will be able to watch 5K and 6K in theaters and in our homes. And those movies shot on film will be able to be transferred to 5K and 6K or whatever else might come out in the future.

So why on earth would someone want to shoot at anything less than the maximum possible resolution now and not be able to present it at that best quality at some time in the future? I color correct and when a client tells me they only want me to master at 1080p or 2K I am left baffled at why they don't want to take a little extra time and a little extra hard drive space to master at 4K or 5K in case they need or want it in the future. I just don't get it.

Shoot max, master max. But still make sure your story is good. That's my rule.

The real problem I forsee is media storage. Film degrades slowly, with a life of 50-75 years aprox? Even the best hard drives are obsolete in 5 years. 10 years, not a chance. Not to mention the change in media formats over the last 15 years. The next 15 years... I don't wanna think about it.

So how am I going to store my prized 5k work for 20 years down the line and more important, what storage format will I entrust it in. This is a question I have no answers for but I need them. For now, I'll just upgrade to the latest drives every 2-3 years. At least storage becomes less expensive as time goes on.

Storage is Moore's law. Better all the time. The question is what did you acquire in?

I keep multiple hard drive copies of everything I have. 3 copies minimum of everything, and it's a good idea to have them in at least 2 different locations. Every 6 months I fire the drives up to check them and run them through to keep the magnetization of the platters. As new larger capacity hard drives come out with newer interfaces I make 3 new copies on new drives. I've been doing this for 6 years now and have not lost any data. Hard drives are cheap. The other option is LTO which likely isn't going anywhere for a long time. And even when a new technology comes out you'll still be able read from your old backup in some way and transfer to the new technology. Heck you can still find floppy drives if you look around for them, so if you need to access your data on an old storage medium you'll be able to. It's not like every SATA interface is going to disappear off the planet in 20 years.
