  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just got my DSMC side handle and noticed it's got what looks like a strobe sync port!

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is new right?
Any updates on the stills mode ?

thanks,
Michael

New? I don't think the side handle design has changed already. DSMC is meant to be hybrid stills and cine. We are assured that it will command strobes one day.

That port is the Appendix of the Side Handle . . . has no function - if it acts up you can have it removed

I dunno - looks like a strobe / flash port to me. Here's one from a Nikon D800. The port on my side handle is brass / copper colored (the older ones seem to be black and I didn't realize they were there until now).

Long time ago RED mentioned that they want to eventually have lighting as part of their product line.

It is indeed a strobe sync port. I don't think it's enabled. Once "still mode" is enabled it will become very useful for those of us that also make a living shooting stills. Can't wait.

Jim posted, maybe six months ago, that DSMC cameras would only work with a "long-duration" strobe, because of the camera's rolling shutter.
I'm not sure exactly what kind of unit he was referring to. He didn't list one.

I have this too :nads:
What, an appendix?

That is true now, but when stills mode is enabled it will likely work like any other DSLR -mirror. I'll be interested to fire up the strobes with nasty little Scarlet and see how it goes.

It will no longer be a rolling shutter once you flick the switch to stills mode?

I don't know how it will work naturally but one might expect that the existing electronic shutter will work in the same way, just faster... At least as far as the user is concerned.

The Phantom Flex has a CMOS sensor and it's electronic shutter operates more than 10,000 times a second. That is plenty fast, and you would expect an electronic shutter to be able to run circles around any mechanical one theoretically.

My side handle is due to arrive on tuesday, i cant waiiiit for the stills mode. I want to connect my portable HENSEL lighting package to my EPIC so bad.

couldn't it be that once the stills mode is activated, that the camera reads out the chip differently to the continuous filming mode and therefore gets around the rolling shutter ? essentially all the hardware is there, they just need to tell the camera that once the shutter button is pressed, it behaves like a good little DSLR and samples a single still frame instead of continuous sensor readout. sounds simple enough but I'm sure the reality is always more complicated ^^
