Replication is the highest form of flattery?

Well there seems to be some Chinese companies machining RED labelled camera PL mounts ( counterfeit ) .. needless to say they are total shit.. and we have been told they have been shorting out cameras and backfocus is so far off you can never get focus.

These will void your warranty. Buyer beware. If you don't want a RED mount, at least support the 3rd party companies that have mounts that are approved to not mess with your camera. It's not worth the pain.

Do this to them Jim:nads:

Just wanted to use that icon!:yesnod:

Heh heh heh...

Pretty much as suspected Jarred.

As regards 3rd party mounts, can I use the occasion to give you a small prod on getting the Optitek FD mount signed off as kosher? I'm lusting after that thing!

Cheers

Mike

Sorry for leaving you out jarred

Do this to them Jim AND jarred :nads:

Is there any 3rd party PL mount that been approved yet or pending approval?

wow..Seriously?
Is it made by a company (or at home) called Film.. something?

Given the criticality of the mount on all sorts of levels - I think 12 microns is the magic number for accuracy for focal depth you want to hit - and given that RED already make the Mother of all PL mounts, I can't see much of a market for 3rd party PL mounts. Plenty of other mounts could more usefully be made.

I'm just waiting for the sign-off on the FD mount... and the RED Leica mount; that might just get me going Leica.

Yeah but it would be nice for a cheaper Dumb PL mount for people who don't use smart lenses.

Haven't seen them on the market around here so far.
But i can try to find the manufacturer so you guys can pay a visit when you'll be on your world tour hehe.

12 microns is way too big if you want to swop mounts without adjusting the back focus, think 5 or less 2 ideally!

I never seen any of mount in China. Who made it?

Agreed. I had the same thing happen with basketball shoes, the trouble is, they take your money and you can't send them back without losing half the purchase. I won't skimp for Chinese PL mounts, or most anything else, you can count on that.

what are you talking about... back focus is important yes. but most other professional grade cameras like the Canon EOS 1 and others actually have plastic mounted aluminum rings... I made quite a few Custom PL mounts for canon cameras and yes it's measurement specific thin to make but nothing you can't create in any normal machine shop. So the only problematic thing with the counter fit stuff would be the electronics. I think a dirt cheap PL mount could be very good to use for a lot of people. So if red just made a low tech al PL mount it would be great. But for the most likely to come RED prime lenses with internal motors I think the TI PL mount is the right thing to get.

In fact, As it is today the Ti PL mount is only giving us broken audio inputs.... It does has a sturdy back focus but I was amazed how far off it was in calibration when the camera was delivered.

I must say Im a bit curious to see the counter fit solution, But my wild guess is that there will not be any posted links for this item on the forum :)

RED provide a very good high quality product at an extremely low price for what you get. You would have to be a complete mug to buy counterfeit accessories of any kind.

Hell I feel dirty just using a another brand of lens support. (There was no RED alternative)

I hope RED will be able to take action against this sort of bull crap. But being its happening in China there is probably fuck all they can do.

This counterfeit mount appeared briefly on the forum last night It looked pretty rough. Part of the issue seems to be that he manufacturer was directly comparing their version to red's and the port cap said "professional red digital cinema".
There's probably a large market for a dumb pl mount but I'd rather see it made by someone like optitek than what looked like someone with a dremel.
