RED102: EPIC and SCARLET Online Course

New Video.. Ugh

New Video.. Ugh

As most of you know, I do take requests for tutorials.. I tell people, "ask for any Video you want.. If I can make it, and if it teaches somebody something.. I'll do it".

I forgot about our beloved "Nuclear" fan boys.. You know 'em.. The ones that LOOOOOVVVVEE RED. So I got a request... Yeah... We're almost finished working on it.

Personally.. if it was me... I would think there are some some things better left alone.. Or kept private.. But hey, who am I to judge? So we're making this new tutorial:

"How to Screw Your Red"

Now.... I'm not going to voice my own opinion here.. I will simply say to Noah, who was the camera man..."Sorry to had to see that".

The video will not be out for a few days.. But I have attached a still. Now for God's sake, before you open this, PLEASE send your kids out of the room... Ok here we go:

Looks great. What format will the videos be in? mp4/h264?

All the videos are in H.264 format and can be downloaded (This does not count our "visiting instructor" series). We're using a new watermarking program that allows this.

Just going on the site now. It's a bit confusing - what order do I view them in? Is there an intro video to tell you how to best use the training? It seems to straight away, even under Camera Basics, go into some pretty un-general topics.

Any suggestions?

ok let me answer this. Bottom line is that we are in the service of two masters, and that makes the beginning of this a little tough. I have my advanced users that hate the videos on the basics, and the beginners who get frustrated by seeing advanced videos with no grounding in the basics.

I am a "basics" guy.. In that I do not like to assume ANYONE knows ANYTHING. That said Stu, one of our members jumped on me for taking TOO much time on repetitive tasks and told me to pick it up.. Message recieved, we'll deal with that in future vidoes. I am still adapting to ONLINE vs DVD I suppose.

So Ben, bottom line is that we need to get the basics out of the way.. And soon.. Go over every button, screw, slot and function of Body of the brain.. Then handle the menu systems. Then move on from there.

As for the order of the videos.. We only got functionality to control the order of them a couple days ago.. So we will be dealing with that also.

THIS is why you guys are on an on-going site with memberships running at 3 months at a time.. This gives us time to fix what you don't like, and capitalize on what you DO like..

We will keep getting better, because all of you will make us that way.

Jay

Appreciate your patience with all our "helpful" advice Jay.
It's all so easy when we don't have to be the ones under the hood making it all work.
kudos-

Actually Jay, that's not really my feelings on it. I wasn't feeling like I wanted more 'basics'. I felt that the topics were a bit obscure and non-general. For instance, in 'procedures' all you've got is stuff about HDRx and the import/export one. I was just expecting that a video about, for example. how to setup for an advanced shoot (not basic training) covering all the more fundamentals about shooting with RED would have been created before videos about HDRx. Additionally, if you have people needing advanced stuff and people needing basic stuff, just separate it out into various segments and people can skip the basic stuff if they want to. My point wasn't that there wasn't enough basic stuff, but more that there wasn't either, no basic intros AND no detailed advanced stuff. However, I haven't watched everything yet so I'll see how I go.But to clarify, I haven't watched anything yet that is too 'advanced' or beyond me. The topics were just not comprehensive enough yet covering all the primary elements and fundamentals (even if those training videos for fundamentals cover advanced techniques - which i DEFINITELY do want). I know you're still adding stuff, I guess I was just surprised by the topics covered so far, don't really give detailed (and advanced) training (yet) on how to shoot with Red. Anyone can turn the camera on and point and shoot. I, just like anyone, are after advaned techniques for how to make great images with the camera. HDRx is only a very small, and in many cases purposely not used, feature of the camera (and something you may not want to rely on especially if you don't want your clips to be double the size). So just keep doing what you're doing I guess, the videos look great and you've got a great set there etc! I look forward to you uploading more videos and seeing a more complete picture of your vision of the full training program. Thanks for your passion for making the program the best it can be!Ben

Ben, your feedback has me a little confused.. I'm not sure what you are asking for. You seem to be looking for advanced technigues or cool tricks within the camera itself. The problem here is that the EPIC and SCARLET are pretty simple in terms of shooting cause there is not real image manipulation done in camera.. It's all RAW. For the AF-100 we had to spend more time on tricks cause what you did with the picture is camera is what you were stuck with.. The tricks and Techniques you speak of really live in REDCineX. THAT'S why the RMD import/EXPORT was done so soon.. That's the beginning of where the majic happens.

RED is more like film than video. It's all about lighting.. The camera just shoots what you light.. Look at the histogram, keep your exposure within the goal posts, and you will be able to make something special.

Now I am not saying there are not cool things to learn.. But truth be told, EPIC and SCARLET are all about understanding the basics, and from there you will be able to create come beautiful images. HDRx may not be attractive to you, but have you considered the INCREDIBLE amount of amazing things you can do with that footage.. Also, I would never consider that technique for entire scenes, but more specific shots.. And for a shot or two, you can handle the bandwith on your SSD.

I THINK I know what you are after, and believe it or not, we are headed in that direction. There the nuggets you seek will be found here and there through out the videos over the next 8 weeks. I WISH I could nail them all at once.. Then I could just sell a DVD for $300 and retire! :)

I know it sounds wierd, but in terms of shooting complexity.. RED ONE, EPIC, and SCARLET actually made things SIMPLERER.. They took most of the work out of the camera, and put it back on lighting, set design, and good post. I can help you know how to set up your camera in certain situations, and how to take that next step in REDcineX.. Then.. If you want, even in Premiere, and DaVinci.. Which we have some of those up now.

Things are a little out of order, but the gaps will fill in pretty quick. Sorry, but we do have to start at the beginning on some stuff no matter what.. I have to do this right.

Hope this is going in the right direction for you.

Jay

Well that's good to hear! Yes, you've deciphered my confusing post correctly, although not so much wanting 'tricks' as more what you said 'nuggets' - the things that people learn after years of shooting on RED. I know that some people have commented that a 'good DP' can get better images out of a Red Camera than someone not experienced. I want to absorb those nuggets of experience as I do pick things up quickly from videos so this is perfect for me.

I've just finished the last videos, and every so often you do mention little things that I didn't know or would never have worked out on my own, so it's been worth it so far. HDRx will be something I use, yes, for specific shots, but again, not most of the time as you say. So what more can we learn about how to get the most out of each shot?

I certainly understand what you mean about how simple it is to shoot.

Looking forward to more videos!

Thanks

Ben

Ah yes I know this discussion well.. To put this in a nutshell (I should be making a video instead of typeing.. Oh well).

Film always had the ability to hold the highlights, but not be too great in the shadows. So over exposing was not too terrible a thing, you could usually pull detail out of highlights with no problem, so DPs would Expose to the "right" if you were to look at a histogram for film.

With RED Cameras, and electronic cinema in gereral, it's 1s and zeros.. If you clip your highlites, you lose the information. Gone is gone.. However, RED has amazing hold on shadows.. So it's the opposite of film.. You don't have a lot of wiggle room in your highlites, but you do in the shadows.. So you expose to the "left"

When we go over histograms in the menus, this gets covered, and some visual samples as well.

I've watched every video in both 101 and 102 and have to say that you're a great teacher, Jay. You're knowledgeable without coming across as a know-it-all and very enthusiastic as well. It's important, I think, for a teacher to come across as genuinely enthusiastic about their subject because it makes it easier for even highly motivated students to engage. Good work! Looking forward to more content!
