  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The one and only Lens

The RED 17-50mm has been a great lens so far since it's all I have for the PL mount. My canon mount comes today though and my two other lenses I'll be using will be the Canon 35mm 1.4 and the 70-200mm 2.8. I can't see me ever needing more than those 3 really.

it is not realistic and doesn't make any sense to have just one lens for the interchangeable lens camera, but if at the moment you have budget just for one decent lens I'd pick EF S 17-55 IS;

I've been looking at the Canon EF-S 17-55 but also at the Tamron 17-50 which has good reviews. Haven't decided which yet but this is the range I would choose for only having 1 lens

Hello -- I seem to be in the same boat (had to sell LOTS of glass in order to afford the Scarlet). So I'm also looking for "the one lens" -- I'll be doing mostly Run-and-Gun.

Pardon my ignorance, but won't the APS-C lenses vignette on EPIC's/Scarlet's APS-H-ish sensor ? If not, this opens up a whole new vista.

Also, no one has mentioned the 24-105 L ... any thoughts ?

Tx,
Serge

The 24-70 is a very nice lens but keep in mind if you're using a matte box that lens is going to be a problem because it's a telescoping lens.

Poppycock. I use the 24-70 with a mattebox all the time, no problems. So it moves in and out, big deal.

Very true,

I'm looking for the best lens that I can use in different situations and it still shines.

Not sure if they vignette, I thought they did as well

I've hear good things about this lens, how is it for you in low light? F2.8?

I just bought this lens (the Tamron 17-50) and in my opinion it was a better purchase them the canon 17-55.

First it is much less expensive. (I bought the no VR version, since the reviews I read described the newest version as being optically inferior)

Second it has much less edge distortion them the 17-55 and also less vignetting.

Third, it has a more consistent brightness across the range than the 17-55, wich will loose almost 2/3 of stop whem you close it down to 55mm

The lack of VR (or IS) sometimes bugs me om my 7D use, but i don`t think it will be a problem on the Scarlet (wich i havent`t got it yet)

From the angle point of view (pun intended) the 24-70 would also be my choice. There are ways to solve the matte-box issues and if this was really to be the only lens - you can most likely get away with screw-on filters and lens-attached shade (not sure how to call those 200-odd $ foldable matte-boxes). You can shoot an entire feature on this lens. Optically it is very good and the 2.8 constant aperture doesn't hurt either...
