Just been testing the Scarlet and Samurai...it's the missing link. The ProRes 422 is beautiful. This is my poor mans Red Rocket and it's a sure solution. Am shooting an epic Skyline R34 GTR clip soon and will post some workflow/samples. I'm excited! Now....to get a battery solution for my Scarlet.....this is killing me! Are side handles getting out there yet?

Yes, I have two side handles, but ordered very early. BTW, it's poor man's Alexa too…

Matthew, are there black bars on top/bottom or sides in a resulting ProRes file?

Shot with our Scarlet and Samurai on Tuesday...great results. The unit rolls automatically when you button on with the scarlet perfectly.

Black bars, yes. But most of my stuff is 2.35:1 crop anyway. Not for everyone but the (10pixelish) top and bottom is fine with me :)

So you only get them at the top and the bottom? That I can live with.

Man, I really thought you shot some Samurai stuff on the Scarlet. Got all excited.... I guess the Samurai is cool too though =P Do you record to SSD's simultaneously? And if so, can you relink the Prores files to the R3d's in post for final color?

I'd be really intersted to know this as well.

What are you rocking out of the SDI; RG2, RG3, or RedLogFilm? If RedLogFilm, are the resultant files as gradable as I'm expecting? Are you using SSDs or 7200rpm hitachi 2.5" drives? Is it hitting the 23.976 mark without requiring pull-down in post (as that would nullify the drag-and-drop-ness of the setup).

Can you snag decent focus off the Samurai? My thinking right now is, get a REDmote as control (since it's "only" $550) and get a Sammy for monitoring and direct-to-prores recording (which I'd probably use 50% of the time.)... It'd be about the same price as the RED Pro 5.0 touch, but allow my set-up to trump Alexa in pretty much every department.

Bob Gundu (tdot represent), answered a lot of these questions for me, but I didn't think he'd actually done it first-hand. I'd love to see some grabs/footy as soon as possible.

Hey Mike, I'm sending out RG3 but did some RedLogFilm and it's even better!! And actually blown away by how far you can push these prores files.....obviously it's not RAW territory but it feels like it compared to DLSR footage. So ridiculously clean and sharp with DR that will knock your socks off (for a baked image). Using SSDs, fast and all that. Great :) 23.976, no pull down, just perfect. The Samurai screen is not really useful...sorry to say. Only good for controlling the unit hehe ;) I'm stuck to a power point so my footage is super lame backyard stuff as a try not to trip on my extension cord....maybe I'll get out there try something else though.

Nick and Tony, I'm still working on a workflow....I believe it is possible. The files contain the same timecode (r3ds and movs)...I sure hope I can get it working :)

Oh, man, sorry about that Arnold... I'm doing my 'made-up, but heavily implied' short forms again... Sammy = Samurai.

@matt - too bad about using it as a display for focus, would have saved me from having to double down on the monitor situation. I don't care if it's a backyard or kitchen or whatever, just as long as contrast can be brought back in to the REDlogfilm prores files without it breaking down. That'd be swell.

would be great to see some samples + info about relinking to RAW for color workflow...

thanks for the info thus far!

Just reading abit on their website and this segment confused me slightly... "Up to 750GB or 16.5 hours recording on each disk.
2.5" spinning disks or flash memory-based SSD's are the most reliable and affordable types of storage on the planet. Use super-cheap spinning disks (up to 750GB HDD) for everday studio and event work and switch instantly to flash based SSD's to give you the robust recording in vibration-sensitive or harsh recording environments. This is the same flash memory as in Compact Flash, SxS, P2 and SDHC cards but at a fraction the cost"

If I am shooting in a scenario where the RAW does not need to be kept and the Red SSD is full could you still then keep recorded PRORES only to the Samurai? If not, when the SSD is finished could you merely empty it and then keep recording to the Samurai - which would (on face value) take both the footage recently erased from the SSD as well as the newer scenes being shot?

Yes you can record to only the Samurai and not to the REDMAG - but only if you manually hit record on the unit. In order to use the camera trigger to record to the internal media and the samurai, there has to be media in the camera. . Once RED fixes the scaling issue, and once Atomos records with the same file names, it's just a decent on location playback unit.

Thanks Bob! How much recording time does the Samurai allow when using it alone to capture?
