  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION MINI

When you say USB3 you're referring to pc only because Mac doesn't support it. At least that's what I know since I've purchased my MacBook a few months ago.

Im using usb3 on my mac everyday... Caldigit has some nice solutions.

They sure do, Jarred. I have a feeling they will have some interesting Thunderbolt stuff to show at NAB.

Thunderbolt is great. it is awesome. but to date the adoption has been almost non-existent. The chipsets are incredibly expensive, ( i.e. expect to pay 2x the price for a REDSTATION ) the cables are incredibly expensive ( 10x as expensive as a Esata or USB 3 cable ) , and the power for portable devices is a bit sideways. I have no doubt that when it gets it's footing and someone actually really adopts it ( not sure why its taking so long ) it will be the go-to choice. Its just not there yet. USB3 is really kicking Thunderbolt's ass right now, even though thunderbolt is better setup for the future.

And I really don't understand the current Thunderbolt power thing. It is the reason why ESATA never really took off other than professional applications in my opinion. no power to the device. I was so damn excited to get my Lacie Thunderbolt Little Big Disk drive for my laptop.. but as soon as I opened the box and realized that i needed to plug it into the wall every time with a big wall wart ( something the Lacie Little Big drives never had to do in the past ) I threw it against the wall. Portable drives that you need to plug into the wall is just plain retarded.

I almost wish Firewire grew up instead of meeting its death ( or near death ).. i really think it was a great interface for many reasons.. it just never took the next step for speed.

So let us see if the PC guys (when the thunderbolt doors are opened to them) can make it a winner.. right now it is just not there yet.

Very insightful, thanks for the info. I'll stop whining; USB 3.0 seems like a good solution for now.

What is it with Apple and their obsession with non-standard protocalls for the sake of daisy chaining?

We have HDMI but no we need display port since it can daisy chain.
We have USB but no we need firewire since it can daisy chain.
We have USB3 but no we need thunderbolt because we can daisy chain.

I've never used any of those standards to daisy chain ever. It's a weird obsession they have going over there...

+1

LOL! Apple does appear to love daisy-chaining. :-)

Cool. Thanks for the update Jarred.

Will the USB3 red station be full size to fit ontop the current base station?

The Caldigit card I have is rocking in my Mac station!

:))

Thunderbolt is still faster… but the bottleneck is usually the hard-disk you transfer the files to… in-field you can't always use fast and big raid-arrays with high throughput (at least I don't… wish I had a nice DIT-cart but most of the time I end up in a corner with a MBP and some SATA-Docks with "naked" drives and bad performance). Can't wait for the bigger SSD's getting more affordable - the death of spinning discs is long overdue imo -> but the price/GB rotation is driving the market so they'll be around for a few more years (and RAID's still help to cover up the failure rates)…

I usually trust BareFeats when it comes to Mac-benchmarking;
http://barefeats.com/hard145.html & http://barefeats.com/hard146.html for USB 3.0 vs Thunderbolt (2.5 & 3.5)

FW400 is/was faster than USB. FW800 is faster than USB2. Thunderbolt is faster than USB3. So it's not just because they can daisy-chain. They are the faster connections AND they can daisy-chain, which makes them better. Also, we've always had FW400 and USB or FW800 and USB2 on Apple computers, so I don't see what the big deal is. I wouldn't be surprised if USB3 shows up in the next Mac Pros, MacBook Pros, and iMacs.

The HDMI connection is huge and not very stable, and not all HDMI versions, connectors, and cables allow(ed) for higher resolution than 1920x1080. A $10 adapter will get you an HDMI connection from the Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port. Daisy-chaining allows for a smaller casing because a bunch of extra ports don't need to be added to portable and smaller computers. It also allows for standardization of the connectors across all of Apple's computers. Thunderbolt is a lot faster than USB3. Anyone who's ever needed to hook up 3 or more external drives with a high-speed connection and without need for additional adapter cards knows how nice it is to be able to daisy-chain. Apple has always given us the better, faster, and more robust connection type, including FW400, FW800, and Thunderbolt, and where necessary there's a way to adapt to another type (i.e. as with HDMI above).

I daisy chain all the time so I for one am happy that these standards support daisy chaining of devices. Plus I love that they are faster than the other standards as Mike pointed out.

There was a point there in development where copper LightPeak ( thunderbolt ) was going to use existing USB ports as an interface... so you would get USB 2, USB 3 and Thunderbolt all go out one port. That would of been awesome.

Multi faceted ports would be F%$^&ing awesome. why can't we all just get along? :boxing_smiley:

pretty cool if you need a reader thats a slim design, much better for light travel.

I'm perfectly happy with my old one, USB 2.0 is also convenient as a safety net you never know and I have a power base station. But this will be a great back up who knows when USB 3.0 and Tbolt will take off. Intel has had trouble with calibrating the new machines for Ivy chipsets so we continue to wait.

will def want the new T-Bold and USB 3.0 version mucho mass faster

Thx Jarred for all the great Tbolt.

Anyone selling their old SSD reader ? If so ill take it !

Too cute!
