The thoughts of epic ownership are kicking around in my head.

At this point why is the epic m still in the store? Is it different than the soon to be epic x stage 4?

It doesn't seem to off any particular advantages any more. I mean, it dose have that cool arched heat sink cover......

Wait you mean to tell me that the scarlet is just a gateway drug?

Re: your question. The m is machined. That's pretty much it.

The M casing is CNC Milled from a block versus the X's cast housing. It carries a longer warranty. It say's Epic-M on it. The heat sink cover will be swapped out eventually. That's all I got...

I think I'm gonna unload my R1 and can't decide between Epic-X and Scarlet for my B Cam / Backup Cam.

Well when the time comes I'd be happy to sell you my scarlet, if you go that route......... Gonna need the money for my epic!!!!!!!

Well. there's only $5K difference between M & X now.

I think, as per the X coming out of backorder and being more available now, that the M will leave the store once the X hits the required volumes. Judging by the way RED is moving now, I presume that won't be long (maybe a few months?).

The M needs a heat sync and an IR receiver upgrade (mentioned in a thread about Redmotes recently) - whereas I presume the X has these already (can't test as i don't have a Remote... yet).

Wonder how long it'll be before you go Epic? 5KWS and 5Kana are sooooo nice overcranked - I can feel you cracking... be strong! LOL

I'm hoping by fall. If I get a certain gig, summer. :)

Ahh - I thought Stage4 was available now in decent numbers (or soon to be - ie out of backorder by the end of March & with a shorter turnaround) - hadn't really considered how long a wait there would be.

... or Spring if you can twist an arm or two ;)

It as an impressive beast - DR is the real revelation (as you found with the Scarlet) - so much better that I was expecting (I'm used to seeing my vintage lenses on other sensors - but here, they just shine in a very filmic way... which takes me back to the old days :)

Why is Scarlet not good enough for you, Timur?

Epic X stage 4 is live. You can buy an epic x now. New orders are being processed side by side with the rest of the stages. While the RED ONEs are being evaluated for trade in, EPIC Xs are being sold to everyone else.

Only difference is the CNC mill and the 2 year warranty for the EPIC M.

I want to have access to high frame rates , hdrx in 5k, and lower compression. I have been doing work for a high end vfx house and they want low compression files.

Hi Patrick - sorry, should have directly quoted Jon, as I was replying to him. My thoughts were that Epic X's are freely available now... plus the M still has the old heat sync and IR internally... but I think Jon was meaning that if you need one 'now' ie this minute to shoot on... that the M is still the one to get - as the X means still being part of Stage 4 (however short it is now).

Regarding Stage4, my little friend didn't take long to arrive :)

Timur - keep the Scarlet and call the Epic 'Khan' :)

Scarlet makes sense as a backup and a B cam (on my projects).

Agree on the roll off too.

+10 for the roll off. In telecine last week, we brought back detail in blown highlights from 7219... Alex Berman, excellent colorist at Prime Focus NY... and I'm sitting there thinking shit the highlights look just as creamy and filmic on the Scarlet...

Might just be the best thing about the color actually.

team RED did a great job in how they stretched out that last half stop or so in the highlights. if you compare it to the old M sensor, the clip used to be insanely harsh, and looked like a blobby mess. stretchign those values and the use of exposing for 800 iso with their lower noise floor really helps keeping the highlights look natural even when they do clip out.

my philosophy is, if you really want it to clip you better be damn sure of it, if you can't do anymore to prevent it from clipping without compromising everything else, than that clip better look good :)
